  • New roller derby teams to support (Long background warning)

My BF and I have finally picked a "local" team to support for roller derby. Actually 2 teams. Both teams are somewhat new but so far they've been pretty cool. For this I'll just call the teams I like "North" and "South 2"

    Cast / teams
North Team: - cos they're to the north of us, kinda
South Team 1: - original team to the south of us
South Team 2: - new team to the south of us

background here is long. just saying'

    South 1
We've been shopping for a new team to support this year because the local team "South 1" blew off my BF's offer of support (ideas, photography, and potential sponsorship) cos their financial person kept saying "no". ... and then turned around and used some of his ideas anyway.

Which is kinda sad cos... at the same time she kept complaining about how much work she had to do with the website, with getting permission to use photos of the team cos their official photog wouldn't give them copyrights to the photos etc... and we'd have pretty much given them all of that for free. (our "pay" would have pretty much been bragging rights / and portfolio credit).

And for my own Anti-south 1 bias... when *I'm* noticing calls that their refs "miss" there's something really wrong. (well... missed calls until the team is too far ahead for the opposing team to win that is)

But we still go to their home games cos my bf already bought us both season passes. We just cheer for the other teams.

    North team:
If I have to limit myself to a single team it'll be North. We saw them skate against South 1 earlier this year (S1's first bout of the season I think). My BF talked to their rep and she loved his ideas and they set up a nice rapport.

And he was quick to post the photos he took of them to their FB for them to use.

Then, just a few days ago their rep emailed my BF and invited him to their next bout - vs South 2 as a photographer. We were already going to go anyway to check out South 2, but now my BF got to get in early so he could set up his shots. And, after my ticket was already paid for we found out North's rep had also listed me as a guest too. O well, the ticket price was for a good cause.

We've also been invited to their next home bout - vs South 1 actually.

    South 2
They're pretty new. So new that they had their first bout ever today - against North.

We suspect South 2 is really "located" in OurCity. Some of their skaters use to be in North (same skating names still), but SouthCity is closer to us than NorthCity is. We also suspect there may be a couple of former-South1 skaters in the bunch but if they are... they're skating under new names. (confirmed drama between S1 & S2, but no specific details).

Verdict so far: Not bad. They need some work on blocking but, like North, they were professional and had a fucking lot of heart.

END OF LONG BACKGROUNDS - WELCOME BACK TO ALL THOSE WHO HATE BACKGROUNDS!

    So, long story short...
North team has been very professional. Not just in how they skate but in how they act towards their fans and supporters. My BF made a point of giving them an SD card full of photos after the game. And posted on their FB that the North Rep has the originals and can control the images. (subtle dig to South 1 cos they could have had that). Their rep's already replied with a thank you - so they're very prompt on maintaining rapport. And again, both my BF & I have been officially invited to their next bout.

South 2 was also given some spare camera cards. They're interested in inviting my BF to be one of their photographers as well and so far they've been pretty polite too. not as much rapport with them, but only cos they're so new.

South 1... is it evil that we're planning to go to their next home bout... wearing South 2's shirts?

Oh! And last but not least Zebras for tonight's bout. Two of them (North's IIRC) are officially wftda-certified. In my opinion they were extremely fair, calling each team equally, without bias. And, with some explanation from the announcer, they *clearly* defined where the pack was and were quick to call "no pack" when appropriate. I like that a lot. Cos sure I like it when my favorite teams win... but ONLY when they win fairly.
Working...
