Some time back, I witnessed this just about a mile or so from my apartment.
I'm sitting at a red light in the far right westbound lane of Crenshaw Bl. where it crosses Van Ness Ave. ( anyone familiar with Los Angeles knows that area ) . Suddenly I hear a siren blaring and see an ambulance coming up from behind. Everyone quickly and cleanly stops- except for one poor guy on a scooter. He's an older black gentleman and his ride is one of those big, fancy, sleek-looking expensive scooters. Plus it's bright yellow.
He's heading north up Van Ness and he's hauling ass. When he reaches the intersection, he sees the ambulance coming and panics. Despite having room to safely stop, he slams the brakes. With the brakes locked up, the scooter fishtails out from under him, dumping itself, him, and all his belongings into the street. The man stops but the scooter continues sliding on its side right into the middle of the intersection. The ambulance driver had to hit his brakes and swerve to avoid running over it.
The old man was on his feet in a flash and wrestled his trashed scooter onto the sidewalk before anyone could even offer to help. By that time the light turned green and I pulled away. The guy didn't look hurt and the scooter didn't appear badly damaged, but it was hairy to watch.
