  • Minor Annoyance with Some Revenge

I take public transit to and from work every day. The bus crosses the bay and drops me off two blocks from work. It picks me up on the same block as my building. It's great, despite the lack of a shelter or bench.

Anyway, about a year or so ago, I walked up to my stop to go home to find a new Prius (no license plate) sitting right in the middle of the bus stop. The middle of the stop. Not at either end, but right at the best place to block the bus. The street is only one lane in each direction, so if the bus stop is blocked then the bus holds up traffic. I considered going into the bank that was there to see if someone was the owner, but my bus was coming so I left.

A couple of weeks later, same Prius, same crap. This time, I called the local police. They don't have a lot to do, as it's one of the quietest, wealthiest cities in the U.S. I explain that this is the second time and if they have a traffic officer nearby could they please ticket the car. Before anything happens, my bus comes and I am whisked away towards home.

The Prius did not reappear after that, so I assumed they were warned or ticketed. A couple of weeks ago, it's raining and fairly cold, so I have my heavy coat on, the hood up, and an umbrella. I'm waiting for my bus, when I happen to glance to my right. There's the Prius in the bus stop. It wasn't there when I walked up, so it must have stealthily moved in silent mode into the stop while I was partially blinded and deafened by my coat. There are four empty parking spaces at the end of the bus stop. I lose it. I yelled, "God damn it. What the hell?" Just as I say it, the owner walks up. I look right at her, as she is getting the big eyes (she looked like Punky Brewster in retirement) from me screaming at her car, and I yell, "It's a red zone. It's a bus stop." She leaped into the car and drove away. She is pretty spry for her age.

I haven't seen the Prius since.
