  • Good thing I pay attention

I've seen so many examples of drivers not yielding to pedestrians at crosswalks on campus. I mean, they don't even attempt to slow down! They just blow right through the crosswalk with pedestrians obviously waiting to cross. Also, you have to watch because some pedestrians will just obliviously walk out in front of you when no crosswalk is marked. I'll admit I've had a few close calls myself because I didn't see someone right away, but I always slow down and watch for pedestrians when I approach the crosswalks because you just never know. I'm not perfect, but at least make the effort to be a safe and cautious driver.

Well, today, I was walking from the parking lot to my accounting class. I approached the crosswalk. There was a car coming from my left, so I stopped in case the driver didn't. The driver on my left stopped and motioned me across. I took a couple of steps into the crosswalk when I saw two cars approaching rapidly from the right. I just had the feeling they weren't going to stop even though I was already a couple of steps in front of the car that was yielding for me. I was obviously intending to cross. I just stopped in my tracks since I knew I wouldn't make it across without these two cars slamming on their brakes or hitting me. Sure enough, both cars blew through the crosswalk without slowing down. It was a good thing I was paying enough attention to spot them, otherwise they'd have probably slammed on their brakes or hit me.
