My only problem with money set on the counter is that there are 5 stacks of cups between me and it. OK, fine, customer's not paying attention. But as I'm reaching over the cups, could she help me out?

The only customers I've had that expected me to count out their coins were from another country or older folks who had a bit of trouble seeing. I'm happy to oblige.

I always hand the money or my card (more likely) to the cashier, but I VERY rarely get it back in my hands. If it's money, they'll carefully put it in my hand, but if it's a store where THEY swipe the card, they usually just put it on the counter because I'm busy doing the PIN pad stuff. I don't make a big deal of it, and neither do they. Some cashiers even prefer having the stuff put on the counter (at least at the drugstore I frequent...)

I really don't care if it's handed to me in my hand or on the counter, just so long as I don't have to pick the change out of their hand when they grab a handful of change, or have to pick it out directly from their change purse (durned old people)

GAH! I absolutely HATE it when people just dig all their change out of their pocket and hold it out to me like they want me to count out exact change! There was one customer that came in regularly that ALWAYS did that.

Don't get me wrong, if they have a problem like not being able to see very well, or some other reason that they really do need help counting it, that's one thing, but this guy was a well educated older gentleman who just thought he was above me. I just stood there and looked at him while he held out this handful of change. He kept holding it. Finally he gave in and counted out the change himself, because it's not like I had anything else to do or anywhere else to be. Or any other customers, for that matter.

There was a thread like this here a few months ago, and there are some people who post here that really hate having the money placed in their hands, so it's a matter of opinion.

TBH, seeing some of the people I have watched buying stuff in wine stores and gas stations, I would prefer them to put the money on the counter, so I could sort through the cash with the tip of a ball-point pen, pushing the really filthy coins and notes to one side, then refuse to accept them on environmental health grounds, and then throw the pen away.

This isn't really an issue where I live...for the most part. There are a couple of people who bring me manky money, but I always make an issue in front of them of touching it as little as possible. And it's not so much setting the money on the counter itself that bothers me, it's when I've obviously got my hand out waiting on it and they completely ignore it, and then hold out their hand for their change. If I'm busy bagging or ringing up or something, and you set it down, I can deal with that. It's just when they look directly at my open hand, completely ignore the fact that it's a money receptacle at that moment, throw the money on the counter, and then, after I ring out the sale, they hold out THEIR hand for change. It just makes me want to hit them.

Not just cash, but they flopped their credit cards and they bounced like frogs onto the counter.

We have people fling their credit cards on the counter all the time...it's like they don't even SEE the card reader on THEIR side of the counter. We can't swipe their cards behind the register, they have to use the customer terminal. So they fling it down on the counter and I point at the card reader. (And some of these people are regular customers who have used the card reader before!)

There was this one guy once who asked me which way his card went, held it up, I said turn it around, and he flipped it over, I said flip it back over and he turned it around...anyway this went on for a few minutes before he finally got it turned right (the whole time I was attempting to be nice about it) and when his receipt printed, he signed it and SLAMMED the pen down on the counter so hard it bounced and flew up in the air, almost hit me, and landed in the floor. Because he ASKED me how his card went and I TRIED to help him, and HE was too stupid to follow directions.

I think the only times I can remember placing money on the counter for a cashier was because they were busy at the moment, otherwise I'll try to place it in their hand. I really don't care if it's handed to me in my hand or on the counter, just so long as I don't have to pick the change out of their hand when they grab a handful of change, or have to pick it out directly from their change purse (durned old people); reversely, having someone hold out their hand before I even put their money in the till is just rude.

I don't mind either or as long as it's done politely.

One of my pet peeves was customers who rudely slam the item down. I had a customer at the games store "flick" a game case at me so hard it sailed right right over the counter and tumbled to the floor below.

Just PLACE the damn case on the counter, no need to hurl it or slam it down. It's easy enough for me to figure out what you want.

You know, actually, I'd rather the customer put the change on the counter. It's easier for me to count it that way. The only thing that irritates me is when the money is in a big wadded-up wrinkly pile.

I hate that too. I even recently got - for the first time - one of those "bra-purse" women (i.e., those that keep their money in their bras/underwear instead of toting around an actual purse or some such). Told her the amount of her purchase, she starts to reach down the front of her shirt and I was like oh no you're NOT!

Thankfully, the money she handed to me was neither sweaty nor gross. But still...have some fucking smidgen of decency, people!

Oh wait, I forgot. I live in Florida. There is no such thing in existence down here.

I dont care. If its busy i would perfer they put in on the counter so i can easily drawer it. but if we are slow i kind of prefer they hand it to me, because at least they know if they gave me the right amount them (some people for a get a one or a some chan ge when they hand me money)

I will also take my time to face the bills if the person drops a wad of folded/mangled bills on the counter.

I will put the money back in their hand, though, unless they make me stand there entirely too long, and then I'll set it on the counter until they're ready to pick it up.

I am the same way. As long as they place it neatly where it won't get knocked off. And for dog's sake, don't put right at the edge on your side of the counter. Put it where I don't have to reach across for it. There's nothing on the counter, that's just rude.

I had a woman once who wasn't ready to take her change, and I still had to bag her stuff, so I put it down neatly on the counter. She got all offended and asked something to the effect of "I put my money in your hand, didn't I?" I just looked at her and picked it up and handed it to her, then handed her her bag and said "Have a nice day." I was just waiting for her to pull the race card on that one because she was black and I am whiter than an albino polar bear. She didn't say it but I could tell she was thinking it.

This is the one situation where working in a pharmacy comes in handy. As the OP says I always hold my hand out as I say the total and ANYONE who ignores my hand to put it on the counter gets the same treatment with their change.
One man actually asked me why i did this and I said 'By the way you yourself ignored my own hand to put the money there I assumed you did not want to make contact and pass on a skin condition, I'm actually quite thankful for your awareness'

It's about respect.

The money I give them back is just as filthy.

It's about treating me like a human being and handing me money or gently placing it on the counter. Not throwing bills at me or flopping credit cards at me. That is rude, digusting, and a shame.
