If someone's leaving a kid that young in your store alone, I'm pretty sure it's a perfectly viable option to call the cops. I think it falls under the category of child endagerment, or as I'd like to call it "do your ing job as a parent"

Or Child Abandonment. That's what I would report at any rate.

Once the child told me the dad was at the BAR I would have called the cops. Someone like that is most likely too drunk to drive, hello CPS.

Personally, I think this SHOULD be SOP for any retail store. Young children (under say 10 or 11) should never just be left behind by a parent to entertain themselves.

Malls should have strict policies on crap like this and enforce them whenever it happens.

See, when I was younger, about..eight-ish, I think, I would get bored with going shopping with my mother, so I would ask her after about ten minutes if I could go and wait in the nearby bookshop or similar store until she was done, and there didn't seem to be any problems throughout the years I was doing it.
But that's just my experience with this sort of thing.

There is a difference between allowing your slightly older, mature child to go to the bookstore or whatever, and leaving your younger, uncontrolled child in a store.

I'm also voting call the cops, which I will be doing the first time someone tries that crap on me.

Ooh, but now we can call the police for real! As a previous court mandated reporter, that's considered child endangerment, and I, for one, am required to report that! Ah, the joys of the daycare training.

Hey, there's a plan- when you see someone dropping off the kiddos toss that one out, "Sir/Ma'am, I am a court mandated reporter. IF you abandon these kids, I'll be fired from my other job if I don't turn it in."

It's extremly risky nowadays to leave a child unattended like that. Not to mention the guy in the post left the child their to go to a BAR. Slightly different than shopping. When I worked at Media Play we had a couple people pull that crap, one left her son their so long, he ended up stealing some candy because he was so hungry.

Agreed. I haven't had to do that yet, but I have threatened to call the police and child protection services on several SC's. The last one tried to leave a couple of small boys who were punching (and I mean puchingmy sensai would praise their technique!) each other with mommy oblivious.

I would have called the cops on those parents. Especially after hearing from the 6-year-old that his dad left him there to go to the bar. It's one thing to leave an older child in one area for a few minutes...I used to come across my cousin's daughter in the bookstore when she was around 9-10 (she's 13 now and has always been fairly mature for her age) but she was always either looking at books or music and her mom or dad was always in the store somewhere. But to leave a young child and completely leave the premises, and the kid doesn't even know how to contact you to boot? I'd be on the phone with the cops in a heartbeat.

this reminds me of something mom said... that sometimes people try to put their hand on your shoulder while talking to you and how intimidating it can be. her answer... do it right back to them, while they're still doing it. evens the intimidation-playing-field

Story 1 . . . I tell him what happened and he has the nerve to be angry with ME!!! I give him a piece of my mind ...

Story 2 . . . I start ringing up all the things that they've opened and broken. She gives me a look and tells me she's not paying for it. I call the police, she pays, game over...bitch.

BRAVO to you for doing that. Maybe these DNA donors will get a clue as to what a parent is supposed to do. (I know that is a long shot, but I can dream.)

I am glad you work in a store that does not come down on you for standing up to such behavior from non-customers.

I recently thought of a response for parents who abandon their kids while they go waltzing off to god knows where. Too bad my retail days are behind me, so i'll never get to use it, but feel free!
