My dad was a Texas librarian for 15 years, with many many stories of the FotL.

I'm passing this quote along to him.

(That said, the FotL booksale in his first library was always GREAT. And as librarian's kids, we got to help set up the books, and...judiciously shelve certain books in a discrete location for later purchasing, shall we say... )

We have friends of the local history library. According to their info: Our Mission: The Friends of the local history library seeks to support the collections of the Texas and Local History Department, the Archives and Manuscripts Department, and the Special Collections Department of the Houston Metropolitan Research Center of the Houston Public Library

Vague descripition, isn't it? I don't know if they raise money or dust. But the members want special treatment. The librarians that work in that dept. have tales about the, but I forgot the details

Recently the local history library is undergoing renovations. Since Sept., we are told not to forward any calls to them. Even us librarians can not go over there to do some research, we have to wait until they re-open in April. These first two people called today.

f1:are they having a Grand Opening of the Local History Library?
cw: the Grand Opening will be April 5.
f1: But are they having a celebration?
cw: we havn't been told.
f1: but why not? People need to know this.
cw: there was a preview in Jan. But so far we don't have information.
f1: I'm a friend and I need to know!
cw: We weren't told. Maybe they will let us know closer to the opening date.
f1: this is not acceptable!!!!! I need to know if there is a celebration.
cw2: (overhearing cw) just give her the number to the director's office.

f2: I need the direct line to the local history library.
me: I'm sorry, we can't connect calls to the local history library. They never had a direct line, so all calls had to go through us.
f2: There is a direct line.
me: Unless you were friends [/sarcasm] with them, they don't give out any of their number.
f2: I had the number to Jo Blo of the local history library, but the extention isn't working. I'm with the Friends.
me: I'm sorry, I can't do anything for you.
f2:...ok

This happened 2 weeks ago.
ass: do you know when they will open the local history library?
me: sorry, no, we don't have that information yet.
ass: do you know when they will put it up on the website?
me: no, no idea.
ass: I don't have time everyday to look at the website to see when they open. Do you know how long it will take them to post it on the website?
me: No, though it shouldnt' take more than a day for the IT dept to put it up when they get the info.
ass: you don't sound so sure. I want to talk to a manager so they can tell me how long it will take. I've gone to (10? 20?) other history libraries, like (some name) and they were much more professional. I find your local history library to be one of the worse I ever had to deal with.
I look for a manager, thinking if this ass doesn't like dealing with the local history library maybe he should just bother those other libraries. A manager does tell me the date was just posted on our blog. I get back on the phone with the douche and tell him the date.
