One time I tried to crack a joke saying "That is the worst you can do to a cashier!" behind an old friend who gave the cashier at my fav store a 100, when she had a small order. He's like "actually, no it's not. blah blah."I awkwardly walked away....

My Grandma sends me $50 bills in a nice card for holiday gifts, I always feel like a nuisance when I have to break it somewhere ....

    I'm sorry! Really!
You could always take them to your bank and ask them to break it for you. I wish customers did that themselves.

I try and NOT take anything larger then a $20, even if I've got the change -- because people really don't seem to like waiting for me to get change for that large bill, don't want small bills, or just don't like me checking it's real. We've gotten several fake $100's before, so yeah.

I've had the same experience -- If someone give you a (pointlessly) large bill and then asks for a different type of change, chances are that they're trying to swindle you. Give them the change you had originally planned upon, then tell them to go to customer service.

And yes, many places that carry only inexpensive items (gas stations, fast food joints, etc) refuse to accept ANY bill larger than a twenty, and have signs saying as much. I seldom even use 50's or 100's even to pay my rent, per my landlord's request.

IIRC, I have seen threads around here saying that fives are actually among the most-commonly counterfeited bills...After all, who's gonna check those? ~_~

the only time i try to get 100s is when i'm planning to use them specifically for paying a large bill in cash.

Or it could also mean this guy is trying to short change you by trying to get you all confused. He probably would've asked for the 100 back and then pay with a 20. My rule is, once I make change, I'm not going to let the customer switch it out. Sure they'll get all huffy and everything, but that's their dam problem. I'm not about to be written up because I let them short change me. Better safe than sorry. But it definitely sounds like this guy was being a dick.
Thing that really bothers me is when people say, "I don't want to break my big bill" Ok, so what if you do break that big bill? Its money for crying out loud people! Its not good for anything else except buying stuff. Sometimes I wonder where peoples' brains are, and then I remember they are customers
Exactly, I've had a few try it, one of the things that gets them upset is closing the till, which slows things way down at my 8-12, even more fun is that IO do this after every change of bill, most don't even get past the first till close, and heaven forbid you try it with anything larger than a 10 because that's dropped, usually right after the till is closed.

I know that many businesses believe that when someone purchases for small amounts and pay with a big bill it is an attempt of counterfeit money.

I think this is a sound attitude, especially when you see that the client has small bills enough to pay for the merchandise.

That was exactly my thinking. There was an incident here pretty recently (a few days ago) in which two women/girls made the rounds at an upscale shopping center with almost a grand in funny money. All $100's, and the footage they released on the news showed smaller purchases.

I don't think I have ever seen a $100 bill in real life. When I go to the US, i get the cash i need out of the ATM on arrival, and its inevitably in $20s.

Come to think of it, I rarely see £50 notes over here. These days, I'm lucky if i see a £20 note...!

Dude, why? What was the point?

I don't understand why people do this. If I have a choice, I pay with the closest denomination note I've got. This guy knew you didn't have a ton of large bills in your till, having seen you change tills and commenting that his place of work did that too. He knew it. So, he must've just decided to be an ass. Well, I hope someone does the same to him sometime soon.
you would be surprised how many times this has happened to me on a delivery. same situation, same wad of bills and all they can come up with $100 or $50 for a $13 order.

People get all huffy and snotty and upset that we can not break their large bill, even when we tell them beforehand (as in when they are placing the order over the phone). sorry I am not getting set up for a potential robbery.

Heck sometimes, on the last delivery on a triple run, I get a little short on bills and people get snotty with me giving them all $1 bills for $15 in change.

On the rate occasions I have either a 50 or 100 $ bill, I will ask if they can take it, usually at either the grocery store or other store that is more likely to have change to give. If they don't, I use another method of payment, until I can get to the bank to deposit the big bills. It's a simple concept, really....but some people just don't get it.

My PT job is in a clothing store, so we don't get many who pay with cash, and if they do, its a 100 to pay for 80-something dollars worth of stuff. Once in a while someone will buy something small, and I have to give them 1's and 5's..I always apologize, but hey, I can only give what I have.

I never carry much more than $10 in cash anyway, and I only do that so I can use the vending machines at work.

He may have been watching you, but who knows who was watching him and taking note of how much cash he had ? Carrying a lot of cash around, much less flaunting it, is a horrible idea.
