One thing I've often wondered about. How do stores enforce the "customers only" parking?

A lot of the larger ones or the ones in larger or even medium-sized malls, if they deal a lot with people parking and going elsewhere, will employ people to roam the lots as spotters, seeing if people are doing just that. I know that they did that exact thing at the strip mall right next to campus, when I got my car towed. If it's a mall or a store near a place where people might be tempted to do that (rather than a huge mall that you'd be an idiot to park there and go somewhere else), it's often worth a few dollars extra in payroll to the mall/store owner to do this sort of thing. Especially if parking is at a premium.

They have people who work there who watch the parking lots I imagine. If a car sits too long (say over an hour), they page the owner overhead. No answer = a tow.

But regarding State Fairs: I used to live a block down from the local fire company. They had a fair every summer (awesome softshell crab sandwiches) as a fund raiser every year. An empty lot across from my house was parking, and it got pretty tight.

Every year I had to deal with idiots either blocking my drive or parking IN my drive. I was nice; I'd have their license plate paged at the fair. A couple of times, though, when I got no answer I had to call a tow truck to come get the offending vehicle.

Had a couple of irate car owners bang on my door but I held firm: they knew they were parking illegally and the consequences were NOT my problem.

As well you should. I was a bit enterprising, and I would rent out spaces for fair parking (living close)..keeping track of the license number of those who paid. If one was there that was not on the list..they would get paged three times (I use to work for the person who ran the fair so I had connections)..no answer..his brother (who ran a tow service) would haul them away. Never lost even a seconds sleep about it.

Arga - You would probably go nuts down here when the local schools hold their semiannual festivals -- These things take up the entire parking lot and then some, so the closest place to "park" is on the Neutral Grounds/medians, which are, of course, covered in No Parking signs. It's just quietly understood that nobody gets a ticket for parking there on those days.

On the opposite extreme : Parking on the street along a parade route during Mardi Gras or the parades before & after St Patrick's Day (just had one yesterday, wheeeeeee), where the No Parking only applies for a few weeks out of the year, they enforce it HARDCORE. After all, one car on the street can prevent the entire parade from moving, so...

Reminds me of the State Fair in my old state.

I didn't want to pay $$$ for parking so I drove to the local wal-mart. Behind the store was a small lot - imaged here - where they set up a park-and-ride facility for fair-goers.

And because of the possibility of over-flow, the Lowes lot was surrounded with signs declaring that their lot was for customers only and that people using it as parking for the bus would be towed.

Seriously you'd have to be blind to not notice the signs. But I'm betting at least someone tried it and lost... and still complained.

LOL you would be amazed how many times I have had to yell at soldiers to STOP SMOKING BY THE BIG TRUCK WITH A FULL 500 GALLON FUEL TANK ON IT!! There were explosive and flammable signs literally all over it. Never helped.

Okay, that is just plain scary.
