  • Grateful Customers

I've worked in a local custard stand for the past six years and I never came across customers as grateful as this pair.

During the day a few years ago, I was working with one other person in the store. Working during the day is nice because the owners aren't in and we can be a little bit more lax.

So these customers come up, about mid-late-20's with basically a bag of change. This isn't uncommon. They order a sundae then ask how much it would be if they added whipped cream (at our store, whipped cream is 50 cents extra, yeah, a bit of a rip off, but we do put a tower of whipped cream on). Unfortunately, they didn't have enough, so they nixed the whippie. I make the sundae and decide, what the heck, I'll toss some on there for them, I'm in a good mood today.

I tell them it's no problem, no biggie, when I hand out the sundae, and they're unbelievably grateful, asking my name and when I work next so they can pay me back. I politely refuse and tell them to honestly not worry about it. They leave happy.

Later that night when I'm off the clock, I come up to pick up my check and the couple ends up coming through drive-thru. The woman, seeing me, jumps out of the car and hands over $2.00, again thanking me profusely, and runs back to the car. I rarely get customers so nice, so it was refreshing to see someone honestly thankful for something as simple as giving them free whipped cream.
