So I was working Tuesday morning, and we have a regular customer that comes in all the time.
He's a 90yr old WWII vet, and one of the nicest people ever. (He also looks like he's closer to 70 than 90, he's in GREAT shape). He jokes around with us all the time, and we with him. (He gets my sarcastic humor, which is awesome.)
Well, he came in to bowl in one of the leagues he's in, and had a strange problem with the scoring on his lane. He comes up to have me fix it.
W = Awesome old guy. (He goes by Whitey, I'm not sure if that's his real name, or something he picked up in the Army)
Me = Awesome young guy.
W: "Hey, can you change <Team member's name> score in the 6th frame to an eight-zero? It says he got a three-spare."
Me: "Sure."
*I change the score*
Me: "Done."
W: "Thanks... oh wait, was it an 8-0 or a 3-5."
Me: "I don't think it makes much difference, let me check... oh it does matter, he had a spare in the 8th frame."
Note: For those that don't know a spare is scored as 10 pins plus the pins you get in the next shot. So if he had a 3 on his first ball the spare is worth 13 points, but if he had an 8, then it's worth 18 points. Quite the difference.
W: *Sigh* "I can't remember... hold on... uhhh" *Slams hand on the counter* "SHIT!"
I was shocked
. I know this guy was in an army, but out of all the times I've talked to him he has never cursed, I even try to control my language when speaking to him, because I didn't think he'd appreciate it (we talk more as friends then as Employee to Customer, so i can get away with being a little more casual in my speech). I've heard him say Hell ONCE, but he was using it in a biblical-context. So that doesn't even count.
It made my day... not the fact that he was frustrated, just the fact that this extremely nice and awesome old guy actually cursed! I couldn't help but smile just a little. It's strange when people do something that you view as being out-of-character for them.
Oh, and it ended up being an 8-0, so he had it right the first time
Note^2: Strikes are scored as 10 pins plus the next TWO shots. In case anyone was wondering.
