When I worked in the cosmetic department in a department store, we had a lot of walk-through traffic because we were in the middle of the store. It was a straight line from the mall, through the cosmetic department, and out to the parking lot. We were used to hecklers, making little snide comments about make-up and perfume, etc.
Well, this one guy, I'd say he was in his late 50's, early 60's, came through while I was doing a "makeover". He leaned in close to me and asked "Can you make me look as handsome as Cary Grant?"
Thinking that this man was much more handsome than Cary Grant, especially the aged Cary Grant, I replied, "Why? You're already more handsome than Cary Grant. I can't work with perfection."
He looked thunderstruck for a moment, and left after we chatted a few minutes. From that day on for a few more years, everytime he came through, he would stop and with a huge grin say, "It's meeee! Cary Grant!"
He was one of my favorite people, even though he never bought anything... I think I totally made his day that first time.
