I’ve been thinking a bit recently about or main security guy, big bloke looks scary but he’s actually rather sweet.(unless your trying to steal / pull something , then running like hell is the only option advisable).
He looks out for the staff a little bit beyond his job and I just realised today I’ve never heard anyone give him a heartfelt thank you even once.
One of the many things I have to thank him for happened over a year ago,
Part of my job was selling things outside the store area,
I was alone, had to stand in one spot for four hours,(no seat)
exposed to wind, rain , sun and anyone who walked up,
had a bagful of money on me (sometimes amounting to £200 or more at the end of a shift)
had absolutely no way to contact anyone if I got into to trouble(ie mugged/ abuse Sc)
And to top it off my then supervisor didn’t give a shite.
She valued my (and any other staff members personal safety) as a non issue.
She was required by the company to send down someone every once in a while to check up on who ever was down there.
Something she never did, and neither was anyone informed that she was suppose to do this least, of all me.
Security man finds out some how that this is going on and near enough has a fit, sending the message that this was not acceptable.
She never did bother to send anyone down to check up on if I was ok or not the most of the time I worked their.
Security man however did. He’d take time out to wander to where I was and ask if I was ok.
Did I need anything, how much money was I carrying , right he’d go kick some arse to see someone came down to visibly take that into the store so I was a less tempting target to rob, had I got a drink (hot sun, previous girl had near enough got sun stroke from being dehydrated because she wasn't allowed one).
As well as the daily lecture that if any point I felt unsafe to leave the stock and run.
This wasn’t part of his job, but if he wasn’t in he made sure someone from his team did it.
The cherry one the top of this? My supervisor possessed a store mobile, which she never used and had no reason to.
A mobile which I could have been used to phone for help if I needed anything or, was in dire trouble.
She didn’t give it to me because the costs of the calls would have been added to her budget , rather than me having to leave the (un lockable) cart, run into the store attempt to find a store phone that wasn’t in use and ring from that.
This cost wouldn’t be charged to her, but to another budget.
On the plus side security man had enough threw an even bigger fit and made her start to send some one down from to check up on my welfare. He’d even make a point of asking me in front of other staff members if she had bothered to do it.(she still only did it half heartedly, once in a blue moon when she remembered)
He made my job a lot pleasanter for showing some human compassion and concern.
