  • Sweet Lady

That's all I can really use to describe her: a sweet lady.

One night, when I worked in fast food, a couple of my cow-workers went to a concert, and called out "sick." Realistically, they were probably hung over, but I digress. In order to keep from having only two people closing the store, my manager called in another co-worker who was to have that day off.

For the sake of anonymity, I'll call her Ricki. Ricki is a single mother of three, so I can can understand her being frustrated for having to cover the two drunks. Normally, Ricki was awesome. She got the job done, and worked fast. Not someone to put on the front cash register, but still a good person, all in all. Unfortunately, Ricki wasn't in such a great mood when she came in.

A family of four came in, and ordered some combo meals, and requested to exchange one side for another. Corporate policy does not allow that, but sometimes we'd do that for customers, mainly depending on who was managing that night. I thought this would be one of those instances, but I was sadly mistaken. When I took that order, and told Ricki and the manager in back what the customers really wanted, Ricki said no. By this point, they had already made the food. Under apparent protest, Ricki got the side these customers had requested. Then she shouted something that I didn't hear(thank God for selective hearing. When she was in a bad mood, she would say all kinds of horrible comments).

The mom of the family, who had paid for everything, rolled her eyes, sighed, and proceeded to order the sides that she and her family originally wanted. I shouted to Ricki and the manager that this was just to compensate for the side Ricki made under protest.

Later, more customers came in, heard Ricki's shouting over other frustrations. When the crowd died down, I went into the lobby to check my stock, and clean a few tables that had been occupied when the family of four came in. I happened to come around their table. The mom in the family looked up at me, and asked, "honey, are you okay? I felt so bad for you." (I live in the south, so women calling each other honey is perfectly normal.)

I replied, "Yeah. She's just upset for having to cover for two of my coworkers who couldn't make it tonight. She's not normally so ..." I trailed off at that point, because there really wasn't a public-appropriate word for what had happened. Plus, I took up for Ricki, because a) I liked her and b) she really wasn't normally so bitchy, and c) public relations purposes.

The lady replied, "Yeah, but that doesn't excuse what she said. It really pissed me off." I just replied with a thank you, and gracefully went about checking the lobby.

That was six years ago, and this story still sticks out to me. Most of the customers I'd dealt with at that store were really nice people, but she sticks out the most due to her compassion.
