Cannibal it is! (thanks crazylegs). I sooo wish i could get away with I as in idiot, but would definately get in trouble with that one. I like the obsolete idea though. Can't wait to use it!

The NATO alphabet for those who may not know what it is: <snip>
That's the one I learned when I was about 6.

C (haven't reached a consensus on this one yet, between captain and catapault)

I (haven't really figured out a good one yet)

O (O is almost never used in serial #'s it's usually a zero)

at work NATO was the one we used too.

of course the first phrase we ever learned in it was "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot"
Probably closely followed by Charlie Foxtrot*, and the more sever Mike Charlie Foxtrot#.

I've had the Nato Alphabet stuck up by my desk at work ever since I had a complete breakdown when trying to give my postcode over the phone. On a work call, to another agency.

Postcodes here are 1 or 2 letters, 2 numbers (and an extra letter for some weird places in central London), then a gap then a number followed by 2 letters.

So the second bit for my office is 5PB.

    That's P for....

which is where I had a complete mental breakdown. I vaguely though of psychiatrist (which is probably what I needed) but that didn't seem helpful. After a long pause I said :

...the little green things (meaning PEAS).

And then had a desperate fit of the giggles.

The poor man I was talking about was very nice, though when we finally got things sorted out he confessed he thought I'd completely lost it and was raving about aliens.

I nearly had another breakdown for B (bzzz), but managed to come up with an actual B word.

Never again. The nato alphabet is quite helpful - particularly as a lot of outsourced call centres seem to use it, and it helps when you run into the denser Indian (or other) accents.

The NATO system also includes number pronunciations as follows

    Zero
    One
    Two
    Tree
    Four
    Fife
    Six
    Seven
    Eight
    Niner

Mostly the same as everday pronunciation but with three alterations to avoid miscommunications over radio and telephone communications
    Four is Fo-wer
    Eight is Ate

With the two styilised (sp?) pronunciations for 4 + 5 there should be no confusion.

    A decimal point (.) is Day-se-mal

My favorite is spelling out cmd for the command prompt.

"C as in Cat, M as in mouse, D as in dog"
