Copied/pasted from the email I wrote my boyfriend tonight.
This has also got a bit of a sucky manager in it. All names have been taken out.
L'il bit of background. I work at "Aid of Rite". The bulletproof glass was put into the door we have to get to the register (which is front of the cart holding area) in response to a robbery a couple months back, one of the night crew had a knife stuck in his side and had money taken out of his drawer. He wasn't hurt. But it's left everyone shaken up and one of my coworkers will not ring on that register anymore because it's so easily accessible. The temporary door we had in place had a lock on it but this one doesn't.
Work today was just oh my God. >_< All the systems kept breaking or fucking themselves mysteriously. >_> They all probably read the memo in the office saying that Tech Support's coming in to replace the main tower/server. That itself has been an ongoing phenomenon. The system somehow throws itself into nothing scans properly mode and in doing so no one can punch out or in, drawers don't show up, pickups don't show up, deposits don't show up, etc. They tried to replace the harddrive once but it failed so Tech Support are coming in themselves to fix it.
Oh, we now have a door made of bulletproof glass. But it still offers no protection. Why? Because there's a 5 inch gap between the register and the door so the door can swing freely. Anybody can easily stick their arms through that gap with a gun and blow our head off or else rob the register. Because said door is also ridiculously easy to open and the drawer for the first register is located right in front of the door so if the door is open we can be robbed blind. Oh, and the sales flyers and rebate books? We got bulletproof glass on the side thing where they used to stick the flyers and rebate books. Now they're located on the back shelf of the cart holding area, which is fricken impossible to get to if the place is loaded with carts. *SIGH* Oh, glass plus people being rough with the carts? People were banging up against it all night long and sending carts crashing into it. I'm surprised it didn't break yet.
So 3 things broke tonight: the printers on the newer registers both screwed themselves printing checks, causing reboots, and the reboot to my register somehow made the sigcap device (the little touch screen card swipy thing) no longer be recognized. As I was counting down tonight the computer in the main office went into kernel panic 3 TIMES trying to boot itself.
I was given my usual drawer to ring on, the second one. Coworker's drawer was the first. Someone wrote out a check for her drawer and during validation it did the "zzzrrr rrr rr, rrr rrr...bee boop clonk bee boop" sound that it does when the printing device in it jams or doesn't write or something. That prompts a restart because the computer freezes and flashes "REMOVE CHECK" beause it still thinks there's a check in there. So Coworker booted her register once and then 10 minutes later, even though Coworker said not to go to her register, Manager #1 decides to cash a Western Union check. So the same thing happens again which means Coworker has to reboot her register. (And Manager # 1 shorted the safe by a pretty big amount by cashing the check from there and DIDN'T TELL ANYONE, so when Manager #3 did his countdown the thing was WAY short).
Later on a girl comes in, semi regular customer, left side of her body's suffering from cerebral palsy or a paralysis, she walks with an odd prancing limp and she usually buys alcohol and a couple other things. She wrote out a check because her card got declined. Guess what happens? "Zrrr rrr bee boop clunk". So MY register needs a restart now which Manager #2 does. Boot goes normally, Windows XP loads fine, blah de blah...however an error message pops up. "Unable to recognize Signature Capture Device, port 10 is already in use". Ok. First customer comes by with a debit card and when I press the button to switch it to debit it says "Unable to Find Sigcap Device". Even after a second reboot it still can't find it. So Manager #2 has me pull my register and then has me log on another drawer in the third register/former manager's drawer. So that's what I do. As soon as that's done I go off for my half (it's near 7 and I haven't sat down or taken a break yet) and then I come back from that. I finish trying to stock and dust the candy that I've been trying to do and I do so while chatting to Coworker and ringing customers. It's a slow night, thank God.
So when it's time for me to leave I call Manager #3 to ask him if I can pull, he says, "Ok, but the computer's acting weird, it's flashing the same message over and over again." So I prepare myself to handcount the drawer down. I go into the office, sit down and stare at the screen. It's flashing "Sorry <filename> cannot be connected to and after 5 minutes I see it go "PANIC blahblahblah trying to load navsomethingorother, preparing to dump <high number> of pages something per '.' . Then it does that and then it goes "Safe to reboot, press any key". So I did, and then while it's loading the same file again it does the same PANIC thing. Ok, so I press the key again. This time it refuses to load on a different file and goes down again. Finally it freezes on "Point of Sale" loading and Manager #3 kept hitting the enter button which prompted it to ask for login info over and over. While it was going into kernel panic the registers went into nothing scans mode and came out. By the time it was frozen on the "Point of Sale" screen I had finished handcounting my drawer and I left.
I just wish that with the new tower they're putting in all of this junk will be fixed as well. (Yeah right).
