Seriously, I pulled it from there, no biggie. I'm currently using it on an Office 2003 setup, and plan to use it for most of the office until the headman decides we can upgrade.

Thankfully microsoft has afaik released a converter to open them in older Office version. But for the life of me I can't find it yet.

Only the OOo.org 3.0 beta (or any recent build from the 3.0 svn tree) reads the OOXML standars (I HATE YOU ISO!! ROT IN HELL) which .docx is part of (along with .xslx and others).

Btw this was a trick that infuriated some people, since the demo version of office 2007 MS gave away automatically saved stuff in OOXML formats, and many people failed to notice it until the demo expired and they where unable to open their files in the old office.

Actually, I was told the latest version of OO.org DOES read .docx, as long as it's a recent update.

It don't work 100% of the time. Because microsoft don't follow the standard for xml document that they put out.

Which of course, microsoft has done since win 95 (quite possible including win 3.0). They want to have a "secret" that only they and their paying support development companies to know.

I ran into this problem a few months back. I believe I found a converter online that I downloaded at the time and it converted it into a simple .doc format.

Word 2007 xml document format. I don't think OpenOffice.org can read it yet, either, so the sender needs to send something else.

what in the name of all I treasure is a .docx? And as I am one of those who consider BIll Gates et al part of the Anti-Christ (and therefore avoid his products if I can), what do I do with it?

Or am I stuck going back to my original sender and asking for something simple like a .txt? We had a recent windows crash, so not a lot has been restored to this box, DH has all that junk with him on Annual training.
