I went with my husband to his doctor appt. I asked his doctor about the medicine shown on TV that women aren't suppose to even look at, lest they die or something.

He told I didn't have to worry if my husband is ever given that pill, since it's only a warning for woman in their childbearing years. I just looked at him like   I didn't realize that 36 was beyond childbearing years.

Now, I realize the doctor just went over how old my husband is and knew I was the wife, but most people figure out that I'm younger than my husband. This is the first time I have had assume I was in the same age range as my husband.

Since that medicine wasn't the reason we were there, I just let the subject drop.

Still, it's the first time I have ever had a doctor say I was past my childbearing years.

After 36 is past child-bearing years? I guess my sister must have missed that memo. She was 46 when she gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby girl.

Hah! What a joke. My aunt had her second kid at 38 years old and her first kid at 35. Eat that one silly doctor!

Don't worry Misanthropical, you're still pretty young.

Seriously. My mom had me at 33 and my little brother at 36, and we both turned out ok. I mean...more or less. ;)

On the flip side of the coin, I'm only 23, and still single, and I get asked all the time about my "husband and kids." :p

He told I didn't have to worry if my husband is ever given that pill...

I would have taken that as him meaning it's okay for my husband because he's (obviously) not a woman in childbearing years.

That's just me though.

NightAngel, the medication I asked about is never given to women, no matter what their age is. It's only given to men. I only asked about it because of the huge disclaimer telling women to not even think of touching it.

I was curious of a medication put on the market that has to have a huge disclaimer and since we were at a doctor's office I thought I would ask him about it.

Uh, yeah, I had a healthy, normal baby at 42.

When I worked in a mail order pharmacy, one of the drugs we provided could cause damage to a pregnant woman's male fetus if she handled a pill that was damaged or crushed.

Women weren't allowed to handle incoming mail... the fear being, of course, that she'd open an envelop and get a message, "This pill's broken... I'm sending it back to you for a replacement."

My grandma had my dad at 42 and they both turned out just fine.

My husband told me that the doctor probably thought I had an incredible face lift.

I don't see how anyone in their right mind could think I was over 45 years old. I still get carded for heaven's sake!

I find it more scary that there are medications out there that if you just touch it could cause birth defects. I'm sure it takes more than just poking the pill a couple of times with your finger to do something but WTH?

Cia-

I'm not a pharmacist or anything but I'd guess that the residue gets on your hands and then from there you could rub your eye or somehow get it in your mouth. With a broken pill I suppose you could inhale powder from the break.

Here's the warning from Propecia:

Women who are or may potentially be pregnant must not use PROPECIA and should not handle crushed or broken PROPECIA tablets because the active ingredient may cause abnormalities of a male baby’s sex organs. If a woman who is pregnant comes into contact with the active ingredient in PROPECIA, a doctor should be consulted. PROPECIA tablets are coated and will prevent contact with the active ingredient during normal handling, provided that the tablets are not broken or crushed.

All that for a hair loss pill? The doctor could have just told me that I don't have to worry since my husband has a full head of hair, instead of saying I was past my childbearing years. :p

It is a bit of a shock when someone assumes you are older than you actually are. It happened to me, too. http://www.customerssuck.com/board/showpost.php?p=99988&postcount=29

Not exactly an ego boost...

Just remember, that's only one person's opinion, not everyone sees you that way! And I've seen your pic in the photo album; trust me, you look just fine! :)

I'm 36 and was told that having another baby would not be a good thing. Said that I would be a high risk case and it could be dangerous to me and the babies health. I would end up on strick bedrest.

My husband doens't know the meaning of this.

I had an x-ray done a couple of weeks ago and the tech asked me if I was or could be pregnant, so apperently he didn't think I was past my childbearing years.

I made darn sure I couldn't get pregnant again, so it's not really an issue. I was just shocked that the doctor assumed I was much older than I am.

Perhaps the doctor should have asked your age before he assumed it?

Remember people, the word assume...........you make an ass out of you and me.

I had an x-ray done a couple of weeks ago and the tech asked me if I was or could be pregnant, so apperently he didn't think I was past my childbearing years.Actually, I think that's a standard question, just to cover their ass because they asked me every time I went for an X-ray on my arm, and I certainly do look my age.

Yeah, it's pretty standard and if you say yes or even pause a bit too long before answering you get to wear a giant, lead filled blanket to protect the potential baby.

The thing is HEAVY!!!
