My mom asked how Jordan was, and I mentioned that his house has roaches (all the ones he's been seeing so far are dead, but that they keep showing up means there's a nest someplace), nasty spiders, and fire ants  The apartment is also not electrically grounded (he managed to ground his computer, but nothing in the kitchen should be touched if your hands are even slightly damp). Landlord has been advised and done nothing. She knew this, I was simply updating her on the continuance of nothing being done.

So, she starts in (in a mildly patronizing tone that drives me up a tree): "You know, there are things in life that you can't do anything about."
:wtf:
You asked.

The above canard seems to be trotted out for anything I happen to be disagreeing with (be it landlord responsibilities, state labor law foolishness, DRM/TCPA*, the state of the government*, ridiculous laws involving pr0n, etc).

Why must it be assumed that everything she hears me complain about is being complained about because I "can't personally solve it"?

* The "if you're worried about it you must be doing something illegal" argument doesn't quite work here...I for one am very surprised she of all people would take a stand like that.

You and your mother have arguments about laws involving pr0n?
That must be interesting.

Well, it started with the GTA Hot Coffee debate (she was convinced that Rockstar knew about the third-party mod when the game was first released), and wended around to the FBI's so-called crackdown on internet porn (don't ask me how that leap was made; I didn't do it)...my viewpoint on that is, why should the government get involved in what someone (or two or more consenting someones) choose to do in their free time, as long as all involved are of age?

That POV seems to be unpopular (um, hi, I'm an adult).
