Well, my mom was whining to me about how she thinks there is a virus on the computer back home. She just gets tons of pop-ups and when she leaves the computer they randomly show up. I had her run a quick ad-aware scan but that did nothing. I told her I'd look at it when I got home. Well, just now, this crap started happening on my laptop. And it's pissing me off. I did a scan with ad-aware and it only found one thing. I have another malware scanner going right now. I'll see if that produces anything. But this is not what I need right now. I have a 7 page paper on Batman comics due Monday (what a load of crap), got a 69 on my third bio test (51 and a 53 1/3 on the other two), my bio lab took an hour more than it should have, etc. It's just one of those days.

Apparently, it's winlogon.exe that's the problem file. And although that's normally a normal file, I'm guessing this is a corrupt version of it. Tried searching all over the internet but nothing helped.

I use all three of these, plus my AV:

Lavasoft AdAware
Spybot Search & Destroy
Crap Cleaner

Tried all of it. It just somehow manages to reinstall itself.

Try running them in safe mode. AVAST can run a boot time scan before the registry loads to clean it off before it can reinstall itself again also.

My general cleaning routine is:

AdAware
SpyBot
housecall.antivirus.com (on line based free-(and very good) virus scanner).

Sometimes SpyBot will pick up a few things that AdAware will miss and vice versa.

*edit* If you run them in safe mode, update them all before you reboot into safe mode.

Maybe it's because you're a Yankees fan? :D

Hm, being a Yankees fan as the cause wouldn't really surprise me. It'd be just like a Red Sox fan to do something like this.

And it would be just like a Yankee to do something like this:

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

Seriously, check out the Housecall site, it's very good and if it can't clean out something, it will tell you how to do it.

You might want to check out the Security Cleanup forum at www.dslreports.com (http://www.dslreports.com). Make sure you read the instructions, because there is a detailed list of steps they want you to follow before they'll render any assistance.

You know, there's a rule out there that you can't block the path of the runner...

But anyway, I'll give the housecall thing a try and then the one MadMike posted.

'crap cleaner' - love that name - where do you find it?

I don't remember that rule. There is a rule that you can't block the path of the runner if you don't have the ball, though.

There's also a rule that you can't leave the base path. And one that you can't slap the ball out of someone's glove because you can't admit you got owned. ;)

Sorry, while I'm a Red Sox fan I'm not a devoted Yankee-hater as much as I'm supposed to be. Don't get me wrong, I hate them as much as the next guy but I'm a practitioner of the "cheer for the good guys don't boo the bad guys" support. Unless the bad guys are refs or umpires, in which case they're fair game (having been an umpire I can say this with some justification).

Not if the next guy(gal) is me! Greenday, last year we went to see the Mets in Game 1 of the playoffs and as we were filing out afterwards, someone got a rousing chant of "Yankees Suck!" going. Just thought you'd like to know. ;)
