Of all the stupid ways to be late for work...
I work for an insurance trust management company. Basically, lots of self-funded insurance plans (Stuff unions or corporations set up themselves) are administered by us. We get claims, we print cheques, we manage the paperwork.
Well, I'm the guy who does cheques, and it's very important every day that they cheques be done in the morning, so they're ready to go out in the afternoon. So I gotta be sure to either come in early, or if I'm not coming in, CALL IN.
I woke up this morning to my phone ringing. I picked it up, wondering who on earth would be calling me at 5am (My usual wakeup time). It was about a freelance computer repair job I was doing. But the person was confused: "Aren't you usually at work by now?"
I look at the clock: 9:42!!
So I shower, call in work... and I've got a two-hour commute, so that means even though I called in, it'll take me 2 hours to get there. So I roll in around 12:30, looking like a COMPLETE jerk.
And the only excuse I can give? I OVERSLEPT.
I even tested my alarm. It WORKS. It DID go off, I just let myself get so tired I slept right through it. So I made myself look like a fool and inconvenience my co-workers, as well as incurring a 'late' on my record because I'm not mature enough to stick to a reasonable bedtime.
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
At least they didn't act mad about it, more bemused. Just please, whatever god watches over children, fools and ships named Enterprise, help me to NOT make a repeat of this?
... Either that, or just decloak that Bird of Prey, blow me to hell and get it over with.

If you want, and promise to be nice to her, I will let you borrow my cat. She is a living breathing alarm clock, snooze button and all. No lie! My alarm goes off at 4:30, and I am a snooze-aholic. If after 2 snoozes I am still not up, the kitty has come up with several creative ways to get me out of bed. 1st she will try by gently combing my hair with her claws, then she will nip at my cheeks, if I still haven't gotten up, she has learned how to snap my brastrap. ( still don't know where she got that one) She even came with built in Daylight Savings. The biggest downside is that she only lets me sleep in an hour and a half on the weekends.
She has saved me from being late through 3 poweroutages & 2 occasions of me not knowing the difference between AM/PM on my alarm.

Heh! I used to have a cat, and she was responsbile for getting me up a few times. Cats don't like changes in routine, and they know when you're supposed to be awake and out the door, and will let you know if you deviate.
Well, mebbe my new roommates in my new place will be okay with a cat. I'll have to talk it over with them after a few months of settling in though.
Actually, maybe that's my problem. I'm in cat-withdrawl!
Think my boss would buy it?

Seconding the cat-alarm suggestion (although mine do NOT have snooze functions!). Between the 20 pound cat stomping on my bladder and biting any exposed body part she can find, the other cat meowing in the hallway, and the dog getting woken up by the cats and starting to whine to go out (after which she bolts back into the bedroom and steals my spot in the bed) I don't really have to worry about oversleeping.
I just wish they'd get the concept of "weekend" figured out...

If I give mine a little scratch right at the base of her tail, she will go away for about 5-7 mins, but it only works once a morning.

I did something like that once, although thankfully it didn't make me a whole five hours late like you. Maybe an hour and a half at the most.
Like you, I managed to sleep thru the alarm. It worked, and was still set, so as far as I can tell, I managed to sleep thru it for a whole hour until it gave up.
Luckily, I had never been late before, so they didn't give me any grief when I called in to tell them. Of course, what I didn't tell them was the reason I over slept was because I was partying and drinking heavily the night before, and now had a killer hangover. :ashamed:

I was 2 hours late one time at Office Max. It was inventory, and well, the boss told me to come in 2 hour earlier. I came in at the same time. They didn't need me for anything, so they told me to stay in the break room until the people that down the inventory left, then I can do whatever. I done what I was told. They also told me that they will pay me for those 2 hours, because I was always on time before that.:D

Banrion could I borrow your cat? That's one of the things I miss about having a cat was that they were living alarm clocks. I owned a Russian Blue and he took no prisoners when it came to waking me up. Owning a greyhound like I do, I face one problem. Greyhounds are not living alarm clocks. Greyhounds will get up whenever they feel like it.
Also, is it bad that I need 6 alarm clocks to wake up? I might have to up it to 8 soon. *Sigh*

I have already been late due to oversleeping at least 10 times.
Only once has been an hour or more late.
The other 9 times were 5-10 mins, 20-30 mins, etc etc...........
All because I'd had an appointment or something earlier that day that kept me awake and prevented my after work nap and my regular bedtime of 3:00.
I shut my cell phone alarm off and slept right through it, only to wake up at 10 or 10:30 and freak out.
Damn 3rd shift.
I don't mind my cat waking me up most times - he starts kneading or puts his head on the pillow next to mine and makes little *merp* noises. However, on occasions when he is quite insistent that I wake up now, he attempts to lodge his entire skull into my eyesocket. Have you ever tried to explain to a couple of protective male coworkers that honestly, the black eye came from your cat?! :o

Our Business Management Intern Manager's alarm didnt go off today, and instead of showing up at 8am, he showed up at 1pm, then wanted to leave at 5pm.? LOL We mad him stay until we closed at 11 tonight. He said that his electricity went off during the night and his alarm was blinking. I might buy that if he was only an hour or so late, but 5 hours????

How on earth do you manage to sleep with a bra on?
Isn't that uncomfortable?

Nope, if your bra fits right, it shouldn't ever be uncomfortable. I find the sensation of my boobs tearing away from my chestwall to be much more uncomfortable. I go braless approx 5 hours a week when I am in the shower, that's it. It's OK though I know I am weird.

Eh, i tend to sleep in my bra sometimes. Usually if i'm getting up really early the next day and i don't feel like wrestling with a bra in the morning. I've never had it be uncomfortable to sleep in one. Then again, when i do sleep in a bra, it usually ends up being a sports bra.

When my parents were away I woke up one morning to the boycat jumping at my doorknob, and another morning to the girlcat chirping outside my door for half an hour (she sounds kinda like a pigeon).
Pablo does not work as an alarm clock...that dog'll stay in bed all day if you let him. (Kinda like me..:o)

I've never slept in by that much, but I do sleep in pretty frequently. I'm one of those I-need-my-8-hours-to-function people, but I can easily sleep 9-10 hours on a regular basis if I let myself. I really wish I could be one of those people who only needs 6 or 7 hours a night and can get by on less if necessary, but it just doesn't work for me. And I'm a VERY deep sleeper. I have to replace my alarm clock every few months because I get used to the tone and start sleeping through it even if I'm not overly tired. I've gotten pretty good at showering and getting ready in less than 15 minutes, since on any given day I'm likely to sleep in until 15 minutes before I need to leave.

Two words: college student. Depending on what time he went to bed, he could quite easily sleep through the day. Heck, I used to get up at 3 pm on the weekends. Of course, I would have been up until 5-7 am that morning, but still.
Now I live at home again with my parents instead of at the dorms. I have 3 golden retrievers and two younger siblings. My house is awake and noisy by 9 am. And my room is right next to our giant tv with newly installed surround sound... Who needs an alarm clock for the weekend when they have family? lol. On weekdays, I'm the last person to get up (at 6:50 am!!!), and my mom usually checks to makes sure I'm out of bed on time.

I was late ONCE to my paper route by 1 hour 45 minutes because of the alarm not waking me up. We had to be there every morning at 3:30am and I got there at 5:16am. After getting there I was yelled at for 15 minutes. This was the first late in two years of going there every single night monday-sunday and never being late or missing a day. It sucks never being able to stay up past 6:30pm without feeling guilty because you aren't going to get enough sleep.

When I had beaten the snooze buttons of one of my alarm clocks to the point of mechanical failure and came to the carpet with a reprimand in my face, I was told that the company is not responsible for my alarm clock.
Made sense.
Ignore the previous "cat alarm" advice. Kitty's are warm, cuddly and make that purring sound that just makes you want to stay right there under your cozy sheets.
If you're gonna get something that takes a dump in your house as an alarm clock, adopt an African Gray parrot that comes from a divorce.
"Bbbbrraaaak! You'll hear from my lawyer! Weeoo."
I have no personal experience with that but my brother tells me it works.
No aquarium. That's probably obvious, though.
