I spent a lovely Saturday paintballing for the first time. It was freaking awesome. Me and the other science nerds from the Alchemy Club went out paintballing and went against some Bio majors. We beat them silly. Then they put us all against some other group that was all hardcore. We played them for two rounds and beat the crap out of them.

I also have three bruises on my left arm, one on my stomach, two on my right arm, two on my left leg, and a scrape on my left knee. Totally worth it.

Paintballing is WAY fun! I did it a couple years ago, and was really enjoying it till some brainsurgeon decided to shoot me in the leg at close range. Now, when I say close range, I mean about 2 feet away from me.
That really hurt.
But other than that, it was HEAPS of fun!

I feel you. I snuck up on two people and shouted at them to surrender. We have a rule where if you are within 5 feet of eachother, you can only aim for the knees down. I got shot in the leg, the stomach, and the arm by them and they were maybe 2-3 feet from me.

Never played paintball but we did airsoft. I used to play it in high school with my track teammates. One of the couples I know is going out because they met at an airsoft meet, that and he shot her in the face by accident.

Congratulations and welcome to the club. Paintball is way fun. I used to be part of a group back in college. Think about 20+ guys on a team workign over a 10-15 acre area of woods and fields and ponds and such. A nice small war indeed.

Unfortunately time and life happened and we all moved away, broke up, stopped associating and generally moved on. So I'm starting to get back into airsoft with a couple of the friends I have now and my older kids.

One of my brothers is a paintball freak. He's been in national tournament and everything. His team was on ESPN a few years ago.

The closest I ever came to paintball was a game of laser tag a few years ago at the Orlando Science Center, with the ex and her son. That was really cool. So I can imagine that paintball will be a thousand times better!

I just can't describe the fun of laying in the semi-fetal position between to perfectly shaped rocks, having tons of paintballs fly over me, pinning me down. Having one hit me square on the top of my head and not exploding. Being shot in the ass running past another game that was going on...

I've had fun and not fun with paintball.

The first time, I had an awesome time (I'll not bore you with the second time). We played games twice from opposite sides of the areas. Mostly, it was in the trees, and the objective of one game was that the attacking team had to get a barrel from a small bridge that went over a dried-up stream. The defending team were off with one hit - the attackers went back to the start, wiped off, and then went and attacked again. Since the attackers would eventually win, it was a timed event - the winning side being the one with the shortest time to capturing the barrel.

We had been told that the record for the site was when a group of mothers and children hadn't been big enough to make enough of a competing team, so the marshalls had made a team. They'd lost - seeing a twelve-year-old stalking across the arena made them laugh so much they got ambushed.

Our side was defending first, and most of us stood around or near the bridge. I was on a tree that was to one side. The obvious tactic is to charge en-masse and take out as many of the defenders as possible, right? They didn't - sporadic and occasional forays came back and forward, and we lost very few people. One guy made a one-man assault, charging up the dry stream bed, just screaming. If he'd have been firing, I'd not have had the chance to hold onto the tree and lean out, plugging him time and time again in the chest. He came on, despite having been hit, and I just kept pumping. I must hae grouped six or seven shots in a small area on his chest.

"I'm hit!" he screamed at me.

"You should turn around and put your hand up!" I called back.

He started going back, me still leaning out, and I felt the passage of a couple of pellets past my head. I looked down the stream and saw a couple of guys taking careful aim at me.

You know that dreamy feeling when you're at the head of your game? It only comes around once in a while. It was incredible. I wasn't really there - I was one with the paintball gun. Phut, phut - the second pellet was on its way before the first had hit, and both hit dead centre of the two guys' chests.

It was about then that one of their team, who had sneaked around the side, ran onto the bridge to snatch the barrel. I was near him. We both went down in a hail of my colleagues' pellets...

Our assault came and we charged, but they ran. Their plan had been to cover the bridge from well behind, so anyone going for the barrel would have been slapped senseless. A group of ours had gone on a sprint and flanked them, and all we saw was a steady stream of our opponents marching off with their hands raised. The previous record had been ninety seconds. We managed it in thirty.

A bit later, there was a game where the opponents had to protect the barrel when it was behind a hide - the sort used by bird watchers. Although I wasn't particularly flush with money at the time, I was calling the marshall over for refills on a regular basis. I just took potshots at likely hidey-holes, and when someone ran out my team blasted them.

Of course, when I was defending, I found a lovely spot where I could look out for many angles behind a tree stump, which meant that many people could see me. I screamed like a girl until they put me out of my misery.

My moment was when we were defending the castle and I was just sitting on these stairs to the left of the entrance. I patiently waited, and finally, three guys ran up to the front of the castle, and put their backs to the front of the wall. They didn't notice me. Three shots, three kills. It was perfect. Then I took a shot to the chin...

Perfect! You are coming next year when we go paintballing. Even though we beat the crap out of the bio majors, help is always welcome.

Pfft, paintball. What a crappy sport.

*Quietly ignores a small fortune in gear behind him*
Er...

Seriously, though, calling me an 'avid paintballer' is a bit of an understatement. It became an understatement when my gear passed the $1000 mark...and that was 2 markers and a pile of older gear ago...
Right now, I'm rocking an upped Tippmann A-5, although it'll likely become my secondary when my shiny new MacDev Cyborg arrives this month. Mmm, Australian electros...
