Now, I'm not a religious person but today was a shock to my system.
My stepmom's sister (I guess that makes her my step-aunt?) had a stroke. She was suppose to meet her mother at 3pm to pick up her daughter and she never showed. My stepmom's mother tried calling her cellphone, because its not like her not to call if she's going to be late and couldn't get a hold of her after multiple tries. She then called my step-aunt's husband to see if he knew where she was. He tried calling her and couldn't get a hold of her either. Finally she called but she wasn't making any sense. He got in his car and drove, thinking she had gotten into an accident, but he found her on the side of the highway with the car still running, the doors locked and one side of the car all scraped up and the side mirror broken off. He called 911 and got her to unlock the car door after a while, she couldn't comprehend what she needed to do.
We found out after she got to the hospital that she has an extremely rare disease, Takayasu's Arteritis. It causes inflammation of the major arteries in the body. One of the arteries going to her brain was barely visible on the one scan they did, and the other artery was twice the size it should be so it could compensate for the lost blood. Now because the artery is blocked off, she has blood clots in her brain.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for the disease and she has a very long road to recovery in front of her. They estimated that she was on the side of the road for over an hour, so they think there may be brain damage and they don't know if she will fully recover from the stroke. Theres always a chance for major complications down the road, especially if something happens with the blood clots in her brain.
It just sucks because she just turned 36 yesterday, and has a 4 yr old little girl, and they aren't even sure if she'll be able to take care of her anymore.
