After seeing the trailer for Assassin's Creed (Me and my stupid urge to read Ctrl + Alt + Del) I decided to work my butt off and get cash for a next gen system. I'm torn between the 360 and the PS3, and here's why: PS3: I own a PS2 and I'd like to play all my games on it, especially Final Fantasy and the like. Problem is, I'm low on funds. With the 360 it'd be cheaper but I don't have any games to play although there are some that look tempting. So fellow gamers, help me please.

360, no contest. The PS3 is a waste of perfectly good parts. It's overpriced and under performing, has virtually no good games (FF XIII is being made by the same guy who did X-2, who is basically throwing out all of the greatness of XII and replacing it with crap). Future Final Fantasy games will be out for the Wii and maybe the 360.

If you're going next-gen, I'd personally go Wii, but, if those two, I'd go 360.

Between the two, I'd say a 360. There is no excuse to buy a PS3.

Or get a Wii (if you can find one. I found 2. 1 for me, 1 for ebay :D). There's so much fun to be had on that system, and yeah, Final Fantasy will be headed for it too.

What Acolyte said.

The 360 has a ton of great games already, is technologically solid, and the price isn't ridiculous. I'm going to be getting one eventually.

The PS3 is a good deal, but only if you really want to get a BluRay. However, there are still reports of PS3s having heat issues and the game selection is currently rather poor. And if you don't want the BluRay player, it's way overpriced. And don't forget the lack of compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games.

I tried to get a Wii this weekend, but there weren't any at the shops in the mall I was visiting.

Actually, unless my source was completely on crack, (a disinct possibility) the PS3 is fully backwards-compatable.

Your source is indeed on crack. The PS3 is only limited in the backwards compatability department.

Yup, definitely on crack.

The PS3 is vaguely backwards compatible. Originally it was released with a chip (hardware) solution to emulate PS2 compatibility, but the most recent production models no longer have the chip and instead rely on a software solution. Unfortunately, as of yet, the software solution is still less useful than the chip was, and although they supposedly changed to software so that they could update it for expanded compatibility, but I don't believe they have at all, yet.

I stumbled on my Wii completely by accident. Went to a store to get a printer cartridge and there it was. Needless to say, I snatched it right up. It is a blast.

Arenaboy - I'm pretty sure I've read that they're going to release FF:Crystal Chronicles for Wii. Unfortunately, no FF games are available for it yet. :(

I figure the Wii is going to be similar to the DS in how games run. The first year is going to be mostly half-assed ports that barely make use of the controller and a few in-house and 3rd party games that took the chance and designed specifically for the controller.

About a year after release, we'll start seeing the real releases. Everybody who took a wait and see stance on whether it would be successful or not is right now working feverishly to get Wii projects out the door.

given the choice, go with the 360, I'm personally going with a wii, but as a rule I wait until a system is "obsolete" until I buy, that way I'm not paying $50 for a game that won't be worth nearly that when I trade in. my next system is probably going to be a PS2

Don't hold your breath waiting for the PS3 to have a price drop. They're losing a ton of money on every one sold because of how undervalued the BluRay in it is. Only if the BluRay production cost becomes much much cheaper will the PS3 price go down.

[edit to add]

Never trade games in. The shops that do that are usually a huge rip-off. Seriously. Look into some of the game trading sites and do that instead. You can get some decent prices for your games and provide a game to someone else at a lower markup. (also, Gamestop will purposefully refuse to stock a new copy of a game for which they have several copies used to force the sale on the used ones because that's where they make their money)

I'll probably wait a few years for both 360 and PS3. Like other said, get the Wii.

PS3 prices will drop when the components prices drop which will happen in a few years. The 360, unless you like fire or repair nightmare (see other thread in off-topic).

The only time you should trade a game in, is if you absolutely hated the game. It's much more worth your while to keep it and have replay value. Even if you hated the game, keeping it will refresh your memory every so often that you hate the game ;)

The ONLY thing that the PS3 can do that the X360 can't right now is Folding@Home - a protein research project that can be run in the spare time of a device.
You can put Folding@Home on your computers too. Both mine are running it right now!

I usually don't but the point is buying new games is pointless, especially since all systems have memory-card saves, and most importantly because they drop in value like wyle e coyote off a cliff as soon as the receipt is in your hand.
if I get sick of a game or if it just sucks I usually trade with freinds or pass it off to a sibling

A lot of people don't like online trading sites, because they are a hassle, and you can get ripped off (Speaking from experience-I've moved literally thousands of dollars worth of gaming minis and paintball equipment over such sites). Plus, you pay shipping, have to wait a while and so on.

Still, though, EB is horrible for trade-ins. Gamestop is a little better, but not much. Even pawn shops do better most times.

Also, completely off-topic, but for dispatch: The quote is actually:
Zoe: "Preacher, don't the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killing?
Book: "Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps."

But, still. Close enough, and it's Firefly and therefore awesomesauce anways.:D

Isn't Gamestop and EB the same company now? Even their website are the same, just different name.

I think so (I see Gamestop logos all over the EB manuals I have to read now), but I've gotten slightly better offers from Gamestop. Then again, that was a few years back, so it may have been before they joined.
