Yes, my cats (well, the boy anyway cuz I know it was him) have finally managed to open my bedroom door.

Twice.

Damn.

I was drying my hair and I hear the door knob snapping back up and looked up and there was the girl, tiptoeing in and looking around like, "Wait, if she's over there, how did we get in here?"

Hopefully they will stay out of there while I'm at work.

Cute. No chance in hell of them staying out while your at work. ;)

Did they work together, do you suppose? Do cats even do the team thing? I know dogs do. My chihuahua was always really well behaved until we got the pug, and all of a sudden, between the two of them they managed to get into all the garbages and let themselves out into the yard. If we separated them, everything would be fine. Together, they'd get into trouble.

Our theory was that the chihuahua always had the brains but needed the brawn before his evil plans could be made fruitful. :)

They weren't called Pinky and the Brain by any chance?

Tonight, we take over the WORLD!!!

Are you saying they actually figured out how to work the doorknob? I had one cat that tried it, but he couldn't get a grip on it to turn it.

And here I thought it was something when my big orange kitty figured out how to spring the lock on the cat door.

You may have to get one of those child-safety door knob covers. The knob can't be turned unless you squeeze the cover tightly.

It sounds like a handle rather than a knob.

I've had cats and dogs, both, that could work those. They'd just watch to see how the people managed it and do the same.

We had one cat that would attempt to turn the knobs recently. He couldn't possibly get a grip on it, but he certainly knew what it was he was trying to do.

Cats are pretty smart. I know that they can work together. Ours used to tag team when teasing the neighborhood dogs.

Yeah, it's a lever-type door handle, not a round knob. He's been trying for a while, jumping at the doors, but never got a good enough grip to pull it down and push it in. I think he's just gotten tall enough that he can reach it without having to leap so he can pull it down more easily. We knew it was just a matter of time. The front screen door has the same kind of handle, so when we leave the inside door open we lock the screen door. Been doing that a while, though that's heavier so harder for him to open. But he jumps at that one too.

After the first time they got in I put them back out in the hall and then heard him trying again, so I just stood and watched the door. He got it open just enough so it wouldn't latch again, then pushed it open; I saw his little white face poking through the crack (he's black/white/brown stripes, she's all grays). I suppose she could be helping with the pushing part but I'm pretty sure he's the main culprit. Now I want to set up the video camera and see how they do it.

Oh, and they did stay out while I was at work. I guess it was only cuz I was in the room. God, I hope he doesn't try it when I go to bed tonight!

....and I thought it was only my cat that did that. He knows that the bedroom door doesn't latch very well, and if he leans on it...he can get in. Usually, I just leave the door open. It's either that, or listen to him cry, scratch the frame, or paw at the door all night. Just yesterday, he tried to pounce on me at 3am

It's not just bedroom doors either. About a month ago, I came home from work, and couldn't find him  After about an hour of freaking out, I found him in the basement cabinet. He'd leaned on the door, crawled through the gap to hide, and simply couldn't get back out! He learned his lesson though and hasn't tried that again.

My big orange one does that with the cabinets under the bathroom sink. It's funny, because he's smart enough to pull it open from the outside and get in, but then it closes on him and he's too stupid to just push on the door to get out. So then I hear him crying and banging around in there and have to open the door and pull him out.

We used to have handles on all the doors in my house. We started changing them to knobs one by one as my dog, Sammy, started opening them. Sometimes he'd open the door, walk in, and shut the door. We finally got around to doing the guest bathroom after poor Sam got himself stuck in there 3 times in the last couple of weeks while we were at work.

Cats I've had over the years have managed to get themselves shut into drawars, closets, cabinets, in between the door and the screen (don't even ask how he managed that one!) and, once, under a door.

Yes, under a door.

The door in question didn't come all the way down to the floor (I think the original carpeting was a thick shag) and so when he was still little, he could slide right under.

Well, he grew a little and managed to get himself stuck about halfway. Oh the piteous cries he let out once he realized the predicament he was in. Luckily the door was slightly loose on its hinges, so all we had to do was lift up on the outside a bit, and he was able to squeeze himself free.

I remember seeing a Funniest Home Videos with a little chihuahua puppy that squeezed under a door. They were filming from the outside of the door, and you see a little head and then the body and he squeezes out and goes trotting down the hall...too cute.

Stripes recently got himself stuck in the blanket closet in my parents' room. My dad heard him crying a while later. When he was a kitten he got shut in the freezer once. Not quite sure how but he was probably in there a few minutes.

This morning I woke up to the girl making noise on the other side of the door. She doesn't quite meow, it's more of a squeaky cooing sort of noise. She almost sounds like a pigeon. She spent 20 minutes out there before I got up. The boy would be more insistent; he's got a real MEOW! :p but he was lounging in the living room this morning.

My 2-yo rat terrier figured out the lever-style door knobs several months ago... The step-daughter and SIL have learned they have to lock the doors to the bathrooms now, unless they want company. She (the dog) is also learning how to open the ones that have to be PULLED on! I've also seen her working on the round knob to the front door....do I need to change her name to "Houdini?"
