I got a girl coming over tomorrow to cook something up, and I was thinking that while we were eating I could put something on.

So then, ladies, please tell me, what are your favorite chick flicks?

Preferably something that puts you in that romantic mood :D

Also, the easier to follow, the better, as English is not her first language.

Love, Actually (Colin Firth is sooooo hot)

Bridget Jones Diary I & II

Pretty Woman

I liked Calendar Girls - bit sad but funny, and makes me want to live a simple life when I'm older.

Sometimes it's not only chick flicks that women enjoy, it's all about the person. My first ex loved action movies more than anything. So we never saw any chick flicks, but "Four Brothers" was a pretty good deal. If your girlfriend is into chick flicks then I've got no idea since the two girls I've dated hated them. "On Golden Pond"? I don't know, I think that's the closest I've gotten to a chick flick.

I hate most 'chick flicks' on general principle: they bore the hell out of me and tend to depict their female characters as moping singles whose lives Just Aren't Complete until they find Twu WUV. Which is why I don't watch that kind of thing anymore.

Actually, I'm just real picky about what I do watch, movie-wise, anymore. Some things I won't watch because they irritate me, and some things I won't watch because I don't want to be freaked out (I cannot watch most action/thriller/horror type movies anymore after 9/11 because I find it just too disturbing to handle - and I wasn't even anywhere near the sites that day. IMO there's already way too much ugliness in the world and I refuse to marinate in it; I watch movies to ESCAPE reality).

If you want something relatively safe, on the goofy side, you could try either of the Bill & Ted movies. If fantasy is cool, I recommend Harry Potter movies. Also, most of the '80's comedies are pretty good fodder.

I love all kinds of movies but I'm generally not fond of "Chick Flicks" either. The thing most people don't get is that there are "Chick Flicks" and then there are Romantic Comedies. Two completely different genre's in my opinion- sadly, Romantic Comedies are often brushed off as being "Chick Flicks".

Chick Flick= Sappy, over dramatized crap.
Romantic Comedy= A well done comedy in which the character(s) find love and/or resolve relationship issues. The romance part often takes a side car to other plot points- or at least isn't over played.

I find that a lot of "Chick Flick" haters, after seeing an actual Romantic Comedy, don't mind them as much and quite often even like them. Because a good comedy makes us laugh at things we've all faced at some point in our lives.

I'm a big fan of Meg Ryan's Romantic Comedies.
In this order:
1- When Harry Met Sally lead man- Billy Crystal
2- French Kiss lead man- Kevin Kline
Tied for 3rd- Addicted To Love lead man- Matthew Broderick and Kate & Leopold lead man- Hugh Jackman.

Two others of hers that are good but not great in my opinion:
Sleepless In Seattle lead man- Tom Hanks
You've Got Mail lead man- Tom Hanks- is probably my least favorite of hers.

A guy who goes with an Adam Sandler romantic Comedy gets me any day!

50 first dates would be my favourite!

I like Clueless, Legally Blonde (first one, NOT the shitty sequel.), 10 things I hate about you, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

Oh, and The Prince and Me, that was a good one.

I have to agree with Chocolat, 10 Things I Hate About You, and 50 First Dates.

I also like Elizabethtown and you can never go wrong with Shakespeare in Love.

Not all of these are comedies but good anyway:

Hitch
Shall we Dance?
Tristan & Isolde
Shallow Hal
Just Friends
Better Off Dead
High Fidelity
Must Love Dogs- Didn't see this one but my hubby liked it so I thought I'd throw it in there.

Newer Titles:

The Holiday
Because I Said So
Catch and Release

Music and Lyrics falls into the dreaded Chick Flick column in my personal opinion.

I grew up watching army movies, John Wayne, and movies with lots of people getting shot and blown up with my daddy. Mom didn't really watch many movies at all, least of all chick flicks. She got her fix from Soap Operas instead. So I'm not much for chick flicks either. Hell, my favorite Christmas movie is Die Hard.

I would agree with 50 First Dates. It's kind of romantic, and it's got some cheap laughs, too. My Big Fat Greek Wedding was already mentioned as well, but it's a really funny movie that isn't your traditional sappy story. Ditto for The Holiday. It was horribly predictable, but it was cute.

The Mask of Zorro is a good love story with lots of butt-kicking. So is the Fifth Element. Ooh, so is the Terminator.

My SO, who LOVES chick flicks likes just about anything with Julia Roberts. Particularly Pretty Woman.

I like Steel Magnolias, but that's not particularly an "In the mood" movie. I just like to watch Julia Roberts croak.

Though if we're being honest, I LOVE those Lifetime women's issue movies. Holy crap, those people are the best comedy writers on Earth and yet they never get any awards...probably because they don't realize they're writing comedy...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lifetime_Movie_Network <--says it better than I ever could.

Some "chick flicks" I do like, but most of them are pretty lame.

About the only ones I enjoy are Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes.

As for the Lifetime Movie Network, I used to be glued to it, but there are so many times I can watch something before I grow tired of it. And I'm finding the "women as victims" movies rather cliched - there aren't that many victims in the world.

Just give me either a good comedy with a good storyline or a drama that has a good ensemble and a solid story any day.

As for the action films: about the best one I've seen in the last few years were both Kill Bill movies. Uma kicked butt and took names.:D

All I can say is that you are a bigger man than I am. If I have to sit through a chick flick just to get in a girl's good graces, then I usually just have to either stay in the "just friends" faze or find some other way to get to her.

In my opinion, chick flicks are the most clever and sadistic forms of torture ever invented. I can guarantee you that if they started showing those things at Guantanamo as well as all the other military prisons out there, with the prisoners strapped down in front of screen and forced to watch, we would be able to obtain virtually any foreign intelligence that we wanted.

Okay, I realize at this point that I am not really answering your question. ;) So...to help out as well as I can, I'll just suggest that you go with anything that involves a sad, lonely girl (who is in reality a hottie who has no reason to be sad and lonely) meeting and gradually falling in love with some dim witted jock-like dude who can't seem to master the art of buttoning his shirts up past the halfway mark. That always seems to make the ladies mooey.

(And btw, I'm really happy to read all these posts from women who despise chick flicks. Very good sign, and much better for everyone!)

"Chick Flicks" and "romantic comedies" both give me the creeps. Hate. both. genres. with. a. passion.

However, I have been known to watch a few just because of who's in them.

1. Serendipity (starring John Cusack and isn't exactly horridable).
2. The Lake House (starring Keanu Reeves & Sandra Bullock - that one was actually surprisingly good and not too sappy).
3. Auntie Mame (1958 flick with Rosalind Russell - check out my avatar).

Otherwise, hubby knows that if he wants me "in the mood", he has to pop in anything with Steven Segal. (yes, I know I'm weird.)

I love that movie too! Never thought of it as a chick flick, though. Both my dad and my fiance like it.

My husband thinks it's a chick flick 'cos I'm a chick and it's my all time favorite move of all time!!!!

Besides, I just had to put that on my list. The more people who watch it, the more people will love it. :)

Hubby said I'd be in the mood after watching it. Hmmm .... I might have to watch the movie after the little one is asleep. ;)

Count me in the group of females who completely hate Chick Flicks. I think if Mr. Zu had tried to make me watch those kinds of movies, I would never have become Mrs. Zu.

A few of the movies he did take me to (to win my heart) were: Conan the Barbarian, Road Warrior, Dune, and Pink Floyd's The Wall. Yeah, I'm kinda weird.

Anyway...if you are looking for a romantic comedy, how about The 40 Year Old Virgin?
