oh my goodness I am CRAVING fish and chips right now

no not fries, chips, good old fashioned english style chips

with lemon wedges

and not cod, hoki or snapper

wrapped in newspaper eating it with lots of tom sauce and tartare on the side

and tiptop ice cream for dessert sprinkled with milo!!

isnt it pathetic that the only thing I really miss from NZ is the food..... wheres the drooling smiley!!

I could really go for some ackee and saltfish, jerk chicken, a couple of patties, and a bottle of ginger beer. Only spent two years on the island, but MAN do I miss the food.

When I was down there I missed: Walmart (who knew), good beer, Tim Horton's, realistic speed limits (their's is 35km), and being able to find staff in less than six months.

/Fang wonders what kind of fish and chips they had in Auckland (was it Ak?)? Here, it's hoki or cod. What are fries that they're different to chips then? I thought they were the same. You haven't been able to get fish and chips in newspaper here for about 15-20 years.

What about L&P? You could freight some in and make it world famous in Canada! :)

never liked cod in fish&chips one fang, hoki or snapper was what my local chippie did best

fries are like mcdonalds fries thin and oily, not big fat chips like the chip shop makes

they still did it in a newspaper two! with lemon wedges... mmmm

and l&p is nasty :p

I can't really say I'm 'transplanted' from the southeast US, never lived there, but I used to go more times than I could count when I was a kid, don't get down there much anymore and god I miss the food down there! Nothing like grits w/ bacon and eggs and biscuits with gravy for breakfast, I'm tellin ya. Oh and country fried steak with white gravy (real white gravy, aka that with pepper in it!) and and...yea too much to list.

Damnit you've made me rather hungry for food I can't eat at this very second! :p

The food is pretty damn good here in the South, I gotta admit. All the delicacies you mentioned, plus red eye gravy, fried green tomatoes, brunswick stew, turnip greens, myriad barbecue variations....yum! Even the regional beers are excellent. Red Brick Ale (from the Atlanta Brewing Company) is one of the best American brews going.

On the other hand, you can't get good pastrami here to save your life, and don't even think about good Italian. To paraphrase Henry Hill, you order spaghetti marinara and you get egg noodles with ketchup.

I guess no matter where you live, there are trade-offs.

It's not like I moved FAR... Just 3 hours, but far enough to say that driving 3 hours for decent pizza is a little out of the question. I moved from the Ottawa area to the T.O area...

There is a pizza place in my hometown called George's Place... Prior to that the only decent places to get Pizza was The Superior in the next town over when we lived there and before that was the restaurant across from George's Place called "My Second Place."

Thick crust, lots of sauce, REAL toppings, real bacon, big pieces of tomato, green pepper, onions, pepperoni. The works... And TOPPED with cheese. None of this sauce then cheese and putting all the toppings ONTOP of the cheese to have them fall off when you try to eat it.

The only pizza worth eating cold the next day... Salty, greasy and amazing...

The only reason I miss home. LOL Decent pizza...

Every time I go home... Mum's like, "So what do you want for supper?"

"Pizza.."

"Pizza?! You have to be kidding me."

I miss Tim Horton's Chili in a bread bowl- which apparently they don't even do anymore....
I also miss decent beef- it's so hard (and expensive!) to get decent beef in a Buddhist country!

Of course, when I go home, I fully expect to complain about not being able to get sticky rice and good som tam, so what can you do....
