No offense meant just trying to get attention.

I'm no ludite but I tend to stick with what I'm comfortable so I generally do not upgrade AV equipment unless I have no choice. Well now I have no choice as my next to last VCR has given up the ghost. What I would like to get is a DVR with the DVD recorder so I can record shows from cable.
With my retirement I no longer have time to research things like this so I'm asking for opinions on brands and models. Since I do not have HD cable that's not a requirement but it would be nice and I'd rather not spend over $300. TIA

PS: I think I'm going to have to go back to work to get some rest no one ever told me retirement was going to be so busy.

Your best bet, IMHO, would be to get a DVR cable box from your local provider. That or buy a Tivo if you want to stick with basic. Either way you're paying a monthly fee.

As far as DVD recorders go, you should be able to find a decent name brand recorder for about $150. Try not to pay less, because you WILL get what you pay for.

I have a DVR cable box (which is also HD so if you ever do get HD cable/TV, you're already set) and a Panasonic DVD Recorder. I actually have this setup on 2 TVs in my apartment. I'm a big wrestling fan so I record all the weekly shows to my DVR then put them on DVD.

Personally, I'm a fan of Panasonic DVD Recorders. I asked around when I was shopping for mine, and it was the near universal choice among people who record. The interface is really easy to navigate, and it lets you do a lot of things without being overly complicated. I actually bought both of mine for under $90, but that was because my model isn't the most current so it was a clearance price.
