View Full Version : Chocolate Disclaimer?!

I just saw a commercial for Hershey's Chocolate that had a discalimer on it about enjoying it in moderation. This reminded me of the McFatties lawsuit. I am getting so fed up with ignorance. One look at the Food Guide Pyramid will tell you what you should/shouldn't be eating!

It just upsets me: is this world (or just America) getting so blinded by advertising that they have to be reminded that too much junk is unhealthy?

I'm so afraid of the "enjoy in moderation" disclaimer becoming a part of every fast/junk for advertisement.

GRRRRRRRR!!!!!

Ok, I feel better now. But please tell me I'm not alone in my disgust!

"Chocolate". "Moderation".

Failure to compute.

I saw a package of peanuts that said "warning, may contain nuts". Uh.... Do I even want to know why they had to put a nut warning on a package of nuts?

America thinks we're brainless! It's all so scary! :runaway:

Where I work, we sell packages of hard boiled eggs. On the package: "Allergan information: contains eggs." Duh. I would hope it contained eggs! Anyone who's allergic to eggs who eats that deserves whatever reaction they get.

The allergen warning on my can of Planter's Cashew Lovers Mix says 'Manufactured on equipment that processes peanuts and other tree nuts.'

I have always thought that if you have an allergy to peanuts then you also are allergic to all the other nuts.

It's really sad, but it has to be done due to those sue happy people that should have known better in the first place. We pay for the ignorance of society. :(

Cashews are actually a stem, not a nut. Peanuts (ground nuts) are a legume (bean). Almonds are buggers to open. All can/will still affect nut-allergic people.

That's part of the reasoning for the warnings. I'm still waiting for drug dealers to start saying things like:

"That's a grame of heroin - enjoy it responsibly, my man, and you never saw me. Remember, don't share needles."

Not that I know any drug dealers or anything...

It just makes me angry that (apparently) school health classes, parents, and doctors can't get it through people's thick heads that if it's not meat, dairy, fruit, grain, or veggie, you shouldn't eat more than a little every day!

And the whole "French fries are potatoes = are veggies" thing? Don't even go there. :soapbox:

But I really don't know what I'm more upset about: advertizers thinking America is that dense, or America actually being that dense.

The few people who are lawsuit happy mean the rest of us have to suffer through the labels. Either that or they are TRULY stupid.

Sadly, like most SC's, it's the loud, ignorant, money grubbers that everyone remembers. Not the thousands of other people who use these products every day with no problems or complaints.

The fact that there is a warning label on my hairdryer, "do not use while showering." That says volumes towards why the Darwin Awards exist.

This all kind of reminds me of the article that was posted is response to the Meercat thing, the one about raising wimps. I'm afraid that the day companies actually stand up against idiocy is the day Hell will become an ice hockey rink.

*sigh* . . .

I thought I was the only one that was confused about that! :D

Stupid people always ruin things for everyone; it's just a fact of life. For proof of that, just go to the meerkat thread. In the cases with food labels or the idiots that claim McDonalds made them fat, I don't know who to hate more- the idiots or the greedy lawyers that actually try these cases.

You mean like how cookies are now a "sometimes" food?

I tell ya, Cookie Monster just hasn't been the same since she's been in rehab.

Can we just slap a warning on *everything* that says, "Caution: Common sense required to use this product"? It'd be much simpler. :)

Doctor: Contraband check. (Pulls out cookies.) What are these?
Cookie Monster: I don't know!
Doctor: What do you mean "you don't know"?
Cookie Monster: I-I-I-I don't know how they got there!
Doctor: Well I think you DO know!
Cookie Monster: No, no, no, Derick, D-Derick was in here, uh, earlier, he was, uh, making the, making the beds, he probably put them, I, uh, I was in the john- (eats cookies, guards hold him down and give him an injection) AHH AHH AHH! YOU-YOU GUYS ARE NAZIS, MAN! YOU'RE FREAKIN' NAZIS!
Guard: Shhh! Shhh! Shhh!

You can always count on Family Guy to give you the real truth . . . ;)

I figured the "Enjoy in moderation" was because they kept showing how "happy" you'll be while eating them. Joy, chocolate swirling, different synonyms of happiness stamped on the chocolate. Considering I don't see it on the bars themselves, I think it was just in the context of the commercial.

Edit: I checked out the website, and the "moderation" thing is not new at all. They mention it in their FAQ's under antioxidants, their sugar free candy. Under the FAQ page, they are touting the benefits of chocolate while also mentioning that it is still high in fat, and should be eaten in moderation. In that context, it makes perfect sense, even if you can't see it on the commercial around the mounds of swirling chocolate. (mmm...)

(From behind the Presidential seal):

"My fellow Americans, I proudly propose a NEW Apartheid system--not based on race, but with Congress's blessing, companies will now be allowed to include two sets of instructions with their products: legal ones like now, and possible ideas for product usage, suitable for normal people. I also urge states to only enforce restrictions on cellphone usage while driving for those governed by the first group. Thank you."

P.S. Good work overseas today.

When I first saw the previews for that movie I was thinking "what in the hell?". I take it the writers must've been city boys.

As far as warning labels go. Some fishing lures have "Do Not Swallow" as a warning on the packaging. We really have to stop trying to protect the stupid from themselves.

Um, those are for the fish - didn't you know?

I read in the newspaper once that macaroni and cheese is listed as a vegetable in restaurants in Texas. Any truth to that?
