It's that time of year. Time to look back at the last 6 years and see all that has happened since 9-11-01.

It is a time to remember all that we have... and to mourn what we have lost.

Thank your fire department. Thank your police department. Thank your emergency service people. Thank your soldiers.

I'll be thanking mine for all that they do on a daily basis.

Hold on to your family members and cherish the time you spend with them... even if they drive you insane at time. Remember the families that will never again see the people that they love.

I will do the same.

We got a phone call from a very sweet lady today, thanking us because back during 9-11, she was able to find out through us that her son, who was working in the Pentagon that day, was alive and unharmed, and she was so grateful and thanked us because she said she didn't think we heard that nearly enough. I have to admit that dampened a few faces in the newsroom.

As I posted on a few of my friends Myspace pages:

Across the oceans,
United we stand,
Lest we forget those who have fallen.
God Bless America!

I may be British but I have a lot of friends across the pond, especially in the New York area.

My cousin lives in NYC and I was freaking out when I heard about it, he was on the other side of town when it happened but you can't help but worry.

Here in Iowa it's colder and a fair deal windier than it was on Sept. 11, 2001, but the sky looks just the same now as then: "severe clear," as a pilot would say.

Six years ago I woke up and listened to Bob & Tom talking about a plane crash in New York City, and I could hear the weight in their voices, and I turned on the TV and saw one of the Twin Towers on fire. I'd been to New York six months before then, with my high school choir. We'd driven up through New Jersey and the Towers were the first part of the city I saw. We didn't visit the WTC, but we did go to the top of the Empire State Building. I had a cheap camera with no focus, but I took pictures of the skyline, Central Park, ships heading up the East River, pigeons on the ledge, in no particular order. When we went to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, we drove down the West Side Highway, right past the Towers, and I know I looked, but I just don't remember what they looked like up close. I figured someday I'd get back to New York and maybe I'd see them then, never figuring that I'd outlive them. What does it say about me that I remember seeing the WTC in the movie "A.I." (saw it in the theater before 9/11) but not from the highway going past it?

Today I was up at about 7:30 AM, which doesn't happen much, since I work second shift, and also am lazy. I listened to Morning Edition and fed the cats. They talked about 9/11 at the moment the plane hit--8:46 AM, Eastern time--but they went on to other topics after a while. I turned on the TV, didn't see anything about 9/11, and after a while I decided I'd actually rather start working on my laundry. (Anyone else find spot-treating armpits more interesting than the Today show, or am I just odd like that?)

I did look up for a little while, saw an airliner passing over, and I felt a little relieved. Life goes on, I'll get back to New York someday, and I'll try to remember what they looked like coming from New Jersey, going down the highway, past where they used to be.

9-11 has been a mixed bag for me.

9-11-01 sucked big time. However, one year later, on 9-11-02, I met the only girl that I (so far) I have ever referred to as "my fiancee." Yes, the infamous Brit.

Both 9-11-01 and 9-11-02 are firmly etched in my memory for different reasons. The first one for the sorrow and destruction it caused. The second for the bittersweetness of my time with The Brit, my ex-fiancee. Because of that, it's always been an interesting and very reflective day for me.

I am somewhat glad I didn't go out with my friend Frank today, as he always tries to set me up with women (when I am single, which I am), and frankly, at this point in my life, and on this date in particular, I want no part of it. That is something he just doesn't get, no matter how many times I may say it. Ah well, he does mean well.

Incidentally, am I the only one that noticed that this is the first TUESDAY 9-11 since Tuesday, 9-11-01? Just something that strikes me, and I don't know why.

I think what needs more recognition on Sept 11 is flight 93........the passengers stood up to the terrorists and made sure that that plane would NOT run in to any buildings or monuments. They sacrificed their lives to save ours. They were HEROS. They crashed the plane into the ground, but they stopped the terrorists on that plane. That's what counts. Always remember the heros of flight 93.

Yeah, I noticed that too.
