So, I just had my first scary incident as a homeowner.
I have a picture window and two smaller windows in my living room. The blinds were down on those. On my door, I have a small half moon window with frosted glass.
I was watching tv in the living room and reading a book. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw movement in the window on the door. It looked like someone was searching the top of my doorframe for a key, it really did.
I saw movement through the string holes in the ventian blinds, then nothing. I peeked out the blinds, and saw a strange car parked in front of my house.
I know that some unsavory characters lived in this house, and not all of their unsavory friends knew they no longer lived here. I'm freaked out.
I check all my window locks, check my backdoor, and call my parents. I start to tell my Dad what happened, and he just started repeating "CALL THE COPS". So I did. I called the non emergency line, which patched me to dispatch, who said they'd get an officer out.
My doorbell is at the same frequency as something the police use, so I knew as soon as he pulled up. I opened the door, and a little slip of paper slipped to the ground.
Another officer arrived, and I explained everything, now with the idea that apparently it was someone papering the street. At that time, the woman who apparently was putting out the flyers came up, since it was her car parked infront of my house. One officer went to talk to her, and got her information.
According to the police, flyers and such are common in this area.
I know it might not seem like a big deal to some, but it was scary to me.

I'm glad you're okay!:) Hopefully you'll become acclimatized to the area, but I'd suggest getting motion sensor lights at the very least as an added precaution if the people who used to live there were "less than reputable" and their "friends" still think they live there.

Well, you're technical ;) setup some remote cameras so you can check out the outside without even getting up from the computer you're glued in front of ;)
But just a warning about motion sensor lights, sometimes they're ultra sensitive and even a flying moth will set it off. So if you're really jumpy, you might want to try a different idea.
Planting thorny type bushes under the window tends to keep folks away from your windows. Wasp are another fun way to keep folks away from your house

I suppose I could run away from home, and pack up my wall of cats and act as your own personal "gatekeeper" but that would just be weird. Also I like my free health care :D
Good lighting, motion sensor or otherwise. You could always electrify the front area, and just zap anyone you don't recognize. Or plant land mines in front of the house, and hook them up to a switch outside...ooh ooh, how about a sniper turret on the roof? Wait, wait I have it. I'll stay here, but ship you the wall of cats, all you'll need is a catapult (get it cat-a...never mind) and there you go. Anyone you don't recognize, you launch an attack cat.
Hope I helped.

Wasps?! I wouldn't want something that would keep me away from my own home.

 You'll be surprise how smart wasp are.
I have 4 nest around my house. One above the bathroom window, 2 up on the side of the house, and there another I just can't find but I see them coming and going
They never bother me, however creeps anyone else out. I've had wasp fly near me, I've swatted a few away. They won't sting me. The plus side is, I don't see much palmetto bugs, roaches or any other kind of bugs for that matter. The wasp and lizards pretty much keeps my house "bug" free.
*edit
When I say wasp, I'm talking the normal wasp. Not africanized bees, not yellow jackets, not those means types. The idea is most people panic when they see a wasp nest and tend to move away as fast as possible. You'll never see someone standing next to a wasp nest

Meh, I have my Bulldog to protect me. It's chambered in 44 Special.:D Got it loaded with 200 grain Gold Dot HPs. (Also known as, "The flying coffee cup".) Makes a great nighstand gun. Had some people TPing neighbors house scare the crap out of me once. Called the police on their butts.
/Glad to hear everything is OK

In any case, on behalf of other jumpy people just walking down the street, please don't let them set it off from way over there. Maybe in a future enlightened age manufacturers will fit them with mandatory gradual dimmer switches. :)

My personal opinion is a pet dog is the best protection. They let you know when someone is outside and they don't take kindly to people who aren't supposed to come in- coming in.
Plus, they're furry. :D

My plan is to convince Spot that anyone that tries to come into the house without me greeting is hoarding all the treats.
That way, I'll be greeted with "FEED MEE!!!!" if anyone tries to get in.
The catapult.... sounds good..

Ummm...
knock, knock....BOOO!!!!
*runs away :p
Sorry...not nice to poke fun.
I know it must be so different and a little scary living in a house on your own. It's so different than an apartment. There isn't the same sense of isolation and security.
I agree with trish that delivering flyers in the evening is an odd time to do it, although the time stamp on your post for my region is only 8:59 pm and I don't know what the time difference is, so it probably isn't all that late at night.
Other than the security lights or even the camera thingy, I don't have any other suggestions to help you feel more secure.
Being scared in your own home is not a nice thing. I hope you feel more secure soon.

Oh, I don't know Ree. I get home from work between 12:30am and 1:30am usually. Many times when I get home at night there's nothing on the door but when I take the dog out around 3:00am then suddenly there's a pizza flyer.
Then I know why the dog was barking at 2:15.
I can't imagine why they'd want to be hanging flyers in the middle of the night but they do. Doesn't really bother me anymore.

I have no doubt that there are people who distribute those things really late.
It's probably easier to get around and cross streets without the heavy traffic.
It's really annoying, though, I'm sure, and can be scary if a dog starts barking at those hours, or someone, especially a single young woman or an elderly person on their own, hears someone moving around outside their door.
