So, for those of you who didn't already know (which is pretty much *everyone*), I'll be heading up the Christmas Card Exchange this year (and possibly for years to come, if I don't go batty after my first try!)
Feel free to start signing up anytime, but please keep in mind the following rules:
1. Do not sign up for the list if you do not intend to send out cards of your own. If you are only able or willing to send cards to a select few people, please PM me and let me know, I will help you make the appropriate arrangements for this!
2. Please remember to include your CS handle, (you may also add your real name if you wish, but your CS name is vital!) and your *entire* address, including country and zip.
3. The last day for sign ups will be Sunday, October 15th, unless I decide to change my mind for whatever reason... (muahahaha! ), in which case I will let you know well in advance!
I will post reminders about this periodically, but please don't wait till the last minute, mmmkay!
Thanks guys!
JAM
*EDIT- Please PM Juniormintz with your membername, real name and address, including your Zip or Postal Code and your country. Also include your email so she can send you the list.

Umm . . . you may want to explain what exactly the exchange entails for those of us who haven't been here for Christmas yet. I think I would like to be involved, but I don't know what I would have to do . . .
I loved it last year and still have all my cards, so Im signing up this year again, Ill start buying the cards now, as im on a tighter budget this year.
I tried to handmake as many of my cards as I could last year but I had to leave everything behind when moving countries so they might not be so funky this time around.
For newer members, you sign up to a list to send out Christmas cards to other fellow christmas card list members.
Last year we had around 40 members, so everyone on the list got a WHOLE WHACK of christmas cards. Some included photos, some were just regular cards etc. Any kind of card is great, it doesnt need to be fancy or expensive (we dont live on CEO salaries around here). Its just a nice thing for the holiday season.
Quite often if you post them before the end of October, some post offices will send them cheaper (I posted mine from NZ last year and did a bunch of them before November 1st so I could send my international ones for $1 postage instead of $2.20
count me in!!
Just a reminder...DO NOT POST YOUR CONTACT INFO IN THIS THREAD!!!
If you wish to exchange cards with other CS members, send a PM or email to Juniormintz with your username, real name, complete address, including Zip or Postal Code and country, as well as email address so she can send you the list.
I know that this list was always compiled by a former member and that was always one of her greatest frustrations.
People just assumed that everyone knew which country they lived in.
You will then be sent a list of all the members who are participating, and you send a card to all the people on that list.
You, in turn, will receive cards from all of them.
In order to receive the list, you also need to include your email address so Juniormintz knows where to send the list.
Pretty easy.
They don't have to be expensive cards. I received some beautiful handmade cards from some of the members and I treasure them. (I am a saver, and I have cards going back all the years I have participated.)

I would love to participate, but if the signup is going to be anything like last year, there's NO WAY I'll be able to afford it. I also don't think it would be fair to just send a few people Christmas cards. Would it be OK to just send e-cards or PMs?
JuniorMintz
08-14-2006, 04:22 AM
It's too far out to say right now. All I know is that PMs and e-cards are something separate from this event, so you're on your own there.
I'll post the number of signups every so often, so if we get to the end and there aren't too many people you can decide to join at that point.
I also don't think it would be fair to just send a few people Christmas cards. Would it be OK to just send e-cards or PMs?You can do what you wish. If you want to PM anyone or everyone on CS with a Christmas wish, feel free. If you want to send e-cards to anyone or everyone on CS, feel free, but it will be up to you to get all the details on your own. Juniormintz is only collecting postal contacts and will only be sending out lists to those who have signed up with her.
This is something we have done for several years now and it has been very well received and very successful.
It's voluntary. There is no obligation to sign up for it. Nobody will think ill of anyone for not signing up.
We all understand that not everyone can afford to participate.
As I said, you don't have to go all out buying cards. Handmade ones are nice, too.
The main expense is postage, of course.
My cards are always a little heavy because of the little enclosures that I add, so it was pricey for me, but probably not much over $40. (I forget exactly how much.)
I don't know what it cost the others who participated.
If you sign up, you get a card, if you don't sign up, you don't get a card.
It's pretty simple.

One year I spent about $60 because I bought expensive cards at Hallmark.
Last year I spent about $40 because I found cards that were just as cute and funny at Walgreens for $2 a box.
Ree's right, most of the money goes in to postage. Some people around here make their cards, I've received some fantastically cool custom cards in the past and I'm looking forward to seeing what people come up with this year!

As you all probably noticed, I'm keeping a tally of signups in my signature. I said it before, but please don't wait too long to sign up! I don't want to get a flood of people at the end, and then have to deal with people dropping out because the list suddenly got bigger than they anticipated... plus it would give me a headache.
But as a note to everyone who has signed up so far-please PM me your email addresses too! I need them to send the whole list out when it's ready.
Everybody but Sphinx, that is... she was the only one so far who remembered to include it. Soneone please give this woman a cookie!

I can understand it, though, because I think I only put that "email address" detail in 2 posts, so it was easy to miss. ;)

*cries* :DNow, you just hang on to that cookie, girl.
You didn't falsely accuse at all. You simply hadn't opened One-Fang's PM at the time of your posting. It was merely a problem with timing, and these things happen.
What you are doing is a pretty thankless task and you deserve all the cookies you can get.

I'll sign up if peeps are willing to receive "non-traditional" holiday cards(basic happy holidays type-due to not being a religious sort, and knowing that not all CSers are the same either)
the all inclusive-BlaqueKatt
I don't recall seeing anything in the 'rules' that say cards have to have pictures of the Nativity Scene or specify wishing a Merry Christmas.
The point is in just fostering a sense of community and getting to know each other at a festive time of year, traditionally known for this purpose.
JuniorMintz

Blaque Katt= as long as you aren't mailing dead kittens or chicken poop to us, it really doesn't matter what you send. As long as it's polite, send what you wish.

I updated the list of people who need to send me their email address. Please don't make me PM all you guys, I'm not sure my teeny mail box can take the stress. :o
Also, for the same reason I won't be PMing everyone to confirm that I recieved your information. The day before the deadline, I will post a list of screen names only in this thread of the people whose signups I recieved. If you are missing from *that* list, PM me again.
Thanks, and be sure to check this thread often!
And send me your email addresses! The list will *not* be going out via PM!
Just a reminder...Do not sign up if you don't plan to send out cards.
It's not really fair to those who do.
If you sign up and something unexpected (financial hardship, illness, etc.) prevents you from fulfilling the list, please let Juniormintz know.
Anyone who signs up and doesn't participate without offering a reason will not be put on next year's list.

Uh, in my defence, I will point out that I did indeed send it. Even mentioned so on this thread when JM singled out only one person as having sent it and she apologised, realising she had it. I can only assume it got lost, and I certainly bear no malice to poor hardworking JM for this - it's a tough enough job doing the list. Just wanted to clear my good name. :)

One Fang-added (well, re-added, anyway)
Heck, I'll clear DGC and One Fang's names myself. Thinking back to it, I *know* they sent me their stuff... I'm convinced this is a problem with me (or more likely, my husband) not saving the list properly.
Remember Kids, Jesus Saves, and now so does JAM!
But I'm pretty sure that I'm all caught up now, with only 2 or 3 email addresses missing. I PM'd the members, so once I hear from them we'll be set. If I have your email address, you've been added to my Christmas Address list on Yahoo.
I'm sending out a test email right now, if you do not receive it in 24 hours please let me know! I'm doing this so I don't get 28 emails bounced right back to my mailbox because I made some dunderheaded goof up. And if I *am* going to get them all back, I'd like to just get it over with. :)
Uh, in my defence, I will point out that I did indeed send it. Even mentioned so on this thread when JM singled out only one person as having sent it and she apologised, realising she had it.Yes, and in my defence, since you quoted me, I read your post telling JM you had sent it, so obviously my comments weren't directed at you, but I wasn't about to single people out. ;)
I assumed, since you told her you had sent it, and JM, you, and I had previously discussed your sending it, that you would realize a mistake had been made with the inclusion of your name in her list.

Heh, no crying, stamping of feet, or flapping of jowls. Not really sucky :p
True, but not reading signs is kind of sucky, and missing info that was posted several times is kind of like not reading signs.
My intent was not to single out or attack any one person, and my comment probably came across that way.
I just thought it was a humorous moment, but I realize I probably read it wrong and misunderstood the meaning behind the post to which I was referring.
I do know that Juniormintz was working very hard behind the scenes, and I'm sure it was more than a little frustrating to her, trying to compile a list and get it out by a deadline date so everyone has a chance to participate and have equal time to get cards done and mailed, but still missing some email addresses.
I think it's wonderful that we have such a great group this year. 29 members participating is pretty good.
The point of it is to foster good will and friendship among our members. I hope it's a tradition that never stops.

Well, I was sorta thinking about sticking my own hand up for that. So I don't think finding someone to do it will be a problem.
If I say something here, I'm committed, so I'm going to say it. That'll force me to do it.
Buying 29 Christmas cards is not cheap, unless you get the tacky 10/$2 type packs. So I thought I'd make them. Further, I intend to take my camera, take 29 photos of 'around here', and use them as the fronts. So I hereby publicly declare it so I've gotta do it. :D So be warned - no Christmas views for any of you! (The shops don't even have them out yet), just fluffy sheep, green paddocks, and maybe a big church for a couple of people. That's an idea. Churches in the local towns. Hmm, not a bad idea, One-Fang. Why thank you. :)

Oooh... that is a good idea, One-Fang! I could do that with the pictures I've got already, and it would be easier than what I was contemplating, which was buying blank cards and my daughter and I having a 'Chirstmas card drawing' afternoon.

I will admit now, that I bought my cards, but everyone here is getting the same cards that I am sending to all my friends and family. I am very happy with them they are beautiful, and came with pre-printed address stickers. When you pre-order your 200 custom cards in september though, they don't quite hurt the wallet as badly. YAY!
EDIT: I also do all of my outgoing addresses as an excel/word mail merge, if anyone would like me to e-mail them the CS file you can PM me and I will get it out ASAP.
good lord I havent even thought about the actual getting of the cards yet
you organised people make procrastinators look bad! :p
EDIT: I also do all of my outgoing addresses as an excel/word mail merge, if anyone would like me to e-mail them the CS file you can PM me and I will get it out ASAP.
Huh?
Perhaps I am misunderstanding what file you mean, but was wondering why would anyone need you to send the file, when Juniormintz is taking care of that?
The reason for the deadline date, and one person looking after the file is so everyone gets an equal list.
If people haven't signed up by that date, it's unfair to everyone else to suddenly have a new person join up, after they have already budgeted for the set number.
I can understand it if someone accidentally loses their list, so they don't have to bother Juniormintz again.
Or am I misunderstanding? Is this a file to make the addressing of envelopes easier?
I thought I'd make them. Further, I intend to take my camera, take 29 photos of 'around here', and use them as the fronts....Hmm, not a bad idea, One-Fang. Why thank you. :)One of our former members, marine, always did that every year for his cards, and they were always very beautiful. His photographs were professional quality.
While I use my cards to add to the decoration of the holiday, and look forward to the traditional, it's always nice to have beautiful photographs of places around the world that can be framed and used as decorator pieces after the holiday season.
It's not the actual card that's the point, anyway, it's the idea of passing on friendly greetings at a time of year when we tend to look back and remember our friendships.
Can't wait to see what photographs you guys come up with, One Fang and Jpurple.
One-Fang
10-14-2006, 10:49 PM
Well, don't go expecting professional quality now. :)
I think Banrion's idea was that JM would probably send a simple text list, which could be converted into a file suitable for doing a mail merge so that printing labels is much easier. If JM is already sending it as CSV, XLS or similar, that wouldn't be an issue.
Perhaps if JM is not sure what this means either, she could send the list to Banrion first, who would convert it and send it back so it can be sent to all like that. I would prefer it too, as I have some labels laying around unused and it beats handwriting so many addresses. :)
Ah, I understand now.
I'm fine with the list as it always was, because I always address my envelopes by hand. I find it gives it a personal touch. That's just me, though.

Oh, and just a friendly reminder about posting international mail - check your local post centre for cutoff dates. You have to post to USA, Canada, England, Thailand and New Zealand. The cutoff date for ensuring mail gets to the further away places by Christmas may be sooner than you think.
For example, I have to have them all done and posted by 11 November. A full six weeks before Christmas Day! Even though standard international post is supposed to take only a couple of days. (So if it arrives early, you'll know why).
Thanks, One Fang.
I forgot to mention that.
United States Postal Service website: http://www.usps.com/
Canada Post: http://www.canadapost.ca/segment-e.asp
Both sites have calculators for pstage rates, as well as all the info you need regarding cutoff dates and delivery times.

REading over the list, I'm so surprised that everyone has names! Like, real names! LOL
Yes, we are real people, and not the robots that our customers think we are.

I have gotten all my cards addressed. Be warned, some are not Christmas cards. I did write a Christmas like message in those cards though.
I tried to remember to write your screen names beside your real name inside the cards. I also put customers suck under my name, so that you know where it came from. I should mail the first two out today, and then send one every couple of days after that.

Please be advised-
Long story short, One Fang will not be able to participate in the exchange this year. She will not be sending cards, so you are not expected to send one to her.
In other news, I'm hoping to find some more of the DC Superhero stamps that my boss had stocked up on at our office this summer-they were AWESOME. So much cooler than Santas and snowflakes. :muya:

Well, I'm sorry to know that One-Fang is no longer part of the card list. :( I'm sure there's a good reason, however.

OK, I've got mine started, but please keep in mind that the Thai Postal system is a bit on the erratic side- I've had things make it to Canada in under a week, and I've had other things take two months. With any luck, you'll all get them by Christmas! Now I just have to find a good purple pen to address them all with, so you'll know who sent them!

Alright! Cards are in the mail! Broomjockey, yours will be coming tomorrow (Even though I could have just hand-delivered the damn thing and saved myself 51 cents...) and Jpurples will probably get there around New Years. And I just KNOW that at least one will get sent back because I screwed up a postal code or something...

Note:
If you have not recieved the list as of today, please PM me ASAP. Also, please check your junk mail filters.
Thanks in advance.
I guess I unstickied this thread too soon, JAM. (Murphy's Law, I guess. :p)
I assumed, since we changed the title of the thread several weeks ago to, "The list is out. Check your email.," and there hadn't been any problems reported so far, that it was OK to unsticky and move on.
Guess I learned my lesson.
Slap my wrist for moving too quickly. ;)
