Ok guys, I need some opinions here. I ordered the HP box set from Amazon back in July. I just got a call from my fiance that it has arrived. Now I originally ordered it just to have a complete set of hardcovers for the books even though I already have the last 4 in hardcover one is missing it's jacket. Anyhow, I have now been informed that Amazon sent it to me in the publisher's original packaging. You know the whole "Not for release until 10/16/07" and all that. I am wondering now if maybe I should just wrap it in plastic and store it for 20 years and hope it's an investment piece, or if I should just say screw it, and put my box set on display?

If you put it on display, make sure it is out of as much fluorescent light as possible. A good way is in a protective case, such as ones you can buy at craft and framing stores. I know Michael's sells display boxes that have a protective coating that filters UV rays on the glass.

I'm of the mind that if you buy something, you'd better use it. Sure it might make a cool conversation piece, but really, you bought it to read them and enjoy them. Besides, everybody and their mothers has a set of the HP books--how much do you think they could appreciate in value in 10-20 years?

Unless you keep them immaculate ie not even been opened, in anti mould bags out of direct light then no, they won't increase in value much, probably not even enough to cover inflation because so many have been produced. However if everyone else reads then and they're all knackered and trashed then you'll be sitting on a small fortune.

Myself, my twin, my fiance, my mother and his mother don't have sets of the HP books. :p Hell, I think I know of only a select few people at work who've read them. We all read other things.

Well, if you really put all that effort into preserving them and all, but . . . eh. I'm of the mind that books are to be read and enjoyed, and IMHO, it just seems a terrible waste for books of any kind to sit around on a shelf or in a box, never to be opened.

I say read them. I'm going to get a boxed set just so I have the WHOLE set, paperback, hardback, I really don't care at this point I just love reading the books, and want to read them to my kids (when they're old enough ;) ) But I agree with the others. Books are meant to be read, not left on a shelf or in a box

Do what I do, order a second one and open that one, don't open this one. :)
That's how I still have Superman dies and Superman lives in the original packaging. :D
