My baby is gone. :(

A flesh-and-bone baby? Er, no, not quite. The boat, the 1991 Mercury Grad Marquis, the largest car in the world, and--up until a month ago, the only car I'd ever owned--is gone.

I've donated it to the Kidney Foundation, and they'll give me a tax receipt for it. Today, the tow-truck driver came by and took it away. It was there for most of the day, I'd left for a meeting, and when I came back, it was gone. The truck driver did take off the license plate and stick it in the mailbox, and I'm not ashamed to say that I hugged the plate when I saw it. :o

So long, Marquis. You've worked hard for over 367,000 kms, and you deserve nothing but the best. You're a damned fine car, you don't owe me a thing, and I'll be lucky to find a car that's half as good. I'd like to think that you'll be chauferring people in car heaven.

I felt the same way when I had to sell my little SUV (Bronco II)... it had been my grandmother's. She had raised me from age 3 up until about 15/16 when she passed away from complications with leukemia, which was back in 96. I was with her when she bought it and I had so many memories of it, and our road trips, and such.

When she passed, I got it and started driving it when I got my license a few months later. I drove it until I bought a newer car that had fewer miles. Then I had to let it sit in storage, and when I moved after I got married, I could no longer afford storage and parking space was limited for us with our other two vehicles plus our fishing boat at the apartments. So I sold it. I still have the license plates and the little stub/receipt that is on the title that you keep when you sell it and transfer the title. I keep it in a small keepsake box.

Yeah, this car was my parents before I got a hold of it. They bought it in 1994, and it's been used pretty much everyday since then. I haven't been using it as much since I moved to the city (buses are cheap, parking...not so much) but I remember going on family vacations, driving to school, driving to my high school girlfriend's house, going to NUMEROUS hockey games, tournaments, and practises, and trips to Edmonton and Lloyd with friends.

Don't get me wrong, I love the car that I bought, but nothing is quite like your first car. :D
