I was shopping with my roomate and she wanted ice cream. We were struck with the hard decision....french vanilla, new york vanilla, or plain vanilla? And just what was the diffrence?
Whomever gives me the answer gets a cookie!

french vanilla ice cream contains egg yolks, and is usually a bit more rich. i couldn't tell you the difference between new york and plain vanilla, though.
personally, i prefer vanilla bean.

Personally, I prefer not vanilla. Actually, last time I went to Maggie Moo's, where they allow you to get your own scoops of different ice cream for a sundae, I believe I did fudge ice cream, hot fudge middle, extra nuts, peanut butter ice cream, more hot fudge, and butter toffee with...yes...MORE HOT FUDGE! :D

french vanilla is usually vanilla and almond (verylight)
vanilla bean is just vanilla bean
New York vanilla is almost a custard-like flavor
also, I came across this research article someone did... not sure why, but other than the confusing formulas and technical jargon, it was interesting in some parts.

My daughter loves vanilla bean the best, but she'll eat whatever Mommy is eating. (Unless it's peanut butter chocolate ice cream, then it's "icky, stinky, and pee-youie" -in that order!)
Ahem ... for the record. I love to go to the Maryland Rennaisance Faire (and I've been to the Virginia Rennaisance Faire - it's just not as impressive as the Maryland one), and the ONLY ice cream flavor I like it Chocolate. Anything chocolate and the more chocolate there is, the better. I love chocolate ice cream topped with chocolate syrup and chocolate cool whip. Now that is my dream dessert!

@ monlayth - Nope never worked at a Renn Faire, but I have several different costumes I wear, and so I'm mistaken for a worker. :D Also, I did live in the midwest (Omaha, Nebraska to be exact) for several years.
@ Lace Neil Singer - My husband loves Chunky Monkey, but I prefer to buy him the Chubby Hubby.
@ crazylegs - What can I say? I love peanut butter! Mix peanut butter into chocolate ice cream and I'm a happy Rum. Reese's peanut butter chocolate ice cream is the greatest!

I'm a fan of Vanilla Bean, and I usually just pick by looking for one with the black specks in it. :) Mmmm....I <3 melty vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. I'm completely addicted to McDonald's hot fudge sundaes with nuts lately...and McD's is next door to work...it's bad. :o

Heck, I LIVE in New York and I've never heard of New York Vanilla ice cream!
Vanilla bean IS the best though. I wonder if I should pick some up on the way home after school today. o:
But yes, as someone before me stated earlier, French Vanilla is a bit more rich in flavor. And my only suggestion is that if you're really curious, just try the New York Vanilla and see if you like it. (:

.........
Now I know why your tag says "slightly odd"...
Wait, is it all chocolate or just chocolate ice cream? Cuz if it's all chocolate I'd say more than slightly...:D
My personal faves are Breyer's Vanilla Fudge Twirl (makes a good root beer float, too) and Mint Chocolate Chip (with maraschino cherry syrup), followed by their chocolate and vanilla; I like to let them get melty and mix them together.
I also like Haagen Dazs vanilla fudge (when you want really fudgy fudge) or chocolate chocolate chip. And I have a pint of B&J's S'mores in the freezer but I haven't tried it yet.
My dad likes Chunky Monkey...he even makes monkey noises for it. Yes, he'll be 68 next weekend and no he's not senile. Just weird :p

I don't think I've ever found a flavor of Ben & Jerry's I don't like.
The Cherry Garcia version of The Cone is the ONLY cherry ice cream product I have EVER liked.
I generally consider cherry ice cream to be disgusting.
