My wife is heading to the Eukanuba show the first weekend in December. For those of you who don't know, that's one of the top dog shows in the US. It is by invitation only and Zorro (the dog that's going with her) has a good chance of getting breed.
You would think that would be the height of her weekend. Unfortunately, for her, there is also a big Seiger show in Miami (where they show German shepherds German style and promote good German shepherds, like what you see in Germany etc..). This is Kiri's first show.
The original plan was to have me show Kiri. Part of the show is that you run the dog in a circle for 5-10 minutes while the judge critiques the dog. Unfortunately, Kiri thinks that when she runs with me it's playtime and she tries to bite my legs. That idea is shot.
Upon seeing this, my wife's friend (who imports GSDs) told her he has a friend who might be able to show Kiri for us. He is an experienced and known handler. My wife agreed.
A few days ago my wife got a confirmation on who was showing Kiri at the show. Fred Lanting. For those of you in the show (and working) GSD workd are either gasping in shock or snarling right now.
For those of you who don't know, Fred is one of the top people (knowledgewise) with real German shepherds in the US. He's written popular books about them and promotes the real thing. Plus, he's very knowledgeable with canine hip displaysia. He used to be an AKC judge but was kicked out because he (in his own words) "called a spade a spade". He's brutally honest and won't hold back nor will he be afraid to promote a good dog.
The fact that he's willing to show Kiri, and for free, is one of the highest compliments we'll probabaly ever get with Kiri, even if she wins championships.
