I didn't want to threadjack from JAM on her "Chocolate Velvet" thread, so I thought I'd start my own thread to ask for help/opinions. :)
I'm going to be calling my hair dresser tomorrow to set up an appointment to get my hair cut and colored, hopefully before Thanksgiving. I have no idea what I want to do with it, though I have many ideas running through my head. I'm trying to get as much input as I can, so have plenty of opinions to use when I make my decision.
My hair is currently long, reddish (dyed!), and I have very long sideswept "bangs" that I can tuck behind my ears. My hair is now halfway down my back, if not longer, and though it's pretty, it's very tiresome to deal with, especially when it gets static-y no matter what I do in the winter. Also, the red seems to fade very quickly from a color I LOVE to a color I'm ok with.
What I've been thinking is to go chocolate brown, possibly heavier bangs, and possibly shorter, even a lot shorter. I'm attaching some pictures, including me with my current hair, me with it darker and with full bangs, and me a few years ago with blonde hair (not my favorite) cut short and with bangs. Let me know if you have any thoughts...I appreciate any and all input!!

I can't see the pics (the note says attachments pending), but brown is a good all-around color to go with - it's what I'm currently using. Good luck with it. :)

The color in the middle pic is georgeous, and sets off your skin and eyes great. Bangs would be good for you, I think. You have a longish face and beautiful dark eyes...I think they'd really set that off and give you some balance.

I'm with RK. I LOVE the middle pic. You have a great face for bangs like that. I love red hair too, but it fades so quickly. :(
Speaking of bangs, I need to go get mine trimmed.

I'm in the minority here, but I like the third one.
I like all the pics!
Unfortunately, if you want to go red, you're going to have to be prepared to re-do it every 6 weeks or so, because red doesn't last. Especially if you have no natural red tones in your hair. Red is the hardest color to keep bright and fresh.

I vote for the 2nd pic.
Also, EEEEE I am so jealous of your lips! Mine are so thin and pitiful! ;)

Thanks everyone for all the input (and compliments!). I just made the appointment and I can't go until the end of the month, so I have some time to make the decision. At this point, the bangs are pretty definite, as everyone seems to like them. :) And dark will definitely be the way I go, I may ask for a base color with less red in it this time, so it doesn't fade as fast, and contain the red tones more to the highlights.
Again, thanks!
And JAM? I am the only one in my family with lips like mine - we have NO idea who I inherited them from, but I am lucky. :)

Damnit, knew I should have responded from work!!
Before I did my drastic raspberry color, mom was keeping me "kept" in my natural brunette color with warm gold and auburn highlights. It really wasn't too bad to do (ok 2 hours total time but oy, it is my hair after all). Given I have reaaaaaly thin hair, it gave it the illusion of body.
So I vote go chocolate but highlight with some kickassed reds. ;)

Trust me, I'll still keep checking! I'm not getting it done for about two weeks, so I have time to keep thinking/decide.

I think the middle picture is absolutely gorgeous, as is the one on the right.
I think if you went with a dark reddish brown, with brighter red highlights and perhaps cut your hair down to the level of your shoulder blades. Still keep the length but make it a bit more manageable - my hair is about that long, and any longer is such a pain in the ass.
Don't ask me why, I think it would work really well for you!

The final results are in, but I haven't had a chance to get a good picture of it. I went very similar to the middle picture, with the dark reddish color, skipped the blonder highlights so it's a base of dark red with coppery highlights, and I have bangs again. :D I really am enjoying it and have gotten lots of compliments, plus I'm trying a new color care routine to try to get it to last longer. Thanks again for all the suggestions!

I saw in Target the other day that Sunsilk makes a "winter" formula shampoo and conditioner (and probably styling product to go with it...) that's meant to rein in the static. (and I know it's too late but my vote was for the middle style, too :))

Seems I'm a bit late on this one, but being one of those guys that swoons over girls with long hair, felt I'd pipe in.
Personally, I fell out of my chair when I saw the first picture. Or at least my jaw did.
But, being more objective (if I can), my thought was that you should keep the length. Yes, I am biased, but it looks freakin' great! As for the bangs, I though the bangs would look good if they were a little shorter than the ones in the second picture...those are trying to hide your eyes a bit, and in your case, that is a bleedin' crime.
I can't really comment on color, as I a bit colorblind with close shades of red (and green), and I had trouble distinguishing the color difference between the first and second picture. Also, as I have never colored my hair, I have no experience to draw on, but if the red really is a pain to keep up, ditch it.
But I do agree with Irv....this is worthless without pics. Especially since I am now done being objective and want to go back to jaw-dropping swoonery. (And if you ever feel like visiting the Keys and need a tour guide........ )
Yes, hair is the first thing I look at on a woman. Yes, my friends think I'm nuts. No, I really don't care.

because I actually got some pictures of the new hair, taken in good lighting, by a professional photographer friend of mine, and I feel like showing them off. :D
Our favorite of the shoot:

And one I think is cute, if slightly cheesy.

Wow, you look purty...!
I really love the color, and the bangs are a good length cuz they don't hide your eyes. I's jealous..:D

I love the brown colour of the 2nd pic, but I prefer the haircut in the 3rd, although I think the one in the 2nd is good too. I prefer you with bangs, since you have an oval face, and with no bangs, that shape can give you a very big forehead if you pull the hair back. My best friend has the same shape, so I know! ;)
