Yep. We pulled out the dehydrator to make dog treats (liver jerky in a nut shell) and I'm wondering if there are any good ones out there? Beef, chicken, turkey, whatever, hell, if it's good, I'll even attempt a tuna and crab jerky.

Suggestions? Even veggies count.

Fruit is good also- like you can make banana chips, dried oranges (good for eating and in baking), etc.
A friend of mine used to have a dehydrator and she would dehydrate all kinds of fruit for snacks- it was so YUMMY!

Plus, as expensive as fruit is these days who wants to buy a bunch of 'bananas' and have them go bad before you can get them eaten? (Unless you're making banana bread but that's a different issue...)

Frozen fruit is a lot cheaper than fresh, and just as good. :D

That is a matter of opinion. I do not like most frozen fruits- especially strawberries.
Bleh.

I have to agree with Night Angel that frozen fruit doesn't come close to comparing to real fruit. Hell, I love getting as much stuff fresh as I can, to the point of grating my own ginger yesterday rather that buying the stuff in the tube that the produce guy told me was "just as good".....despite there being many things on the label that I couldn't pronounce!

As for this thread, I must say, I misread the title. Thought you were looking for JERK recipes, not JERKY....and I have a killer jerk marinade recipe. *sigh*

4 ounces of fresh blueberries: $6.99
16 ounces of frozen blueberries: $0.99

One pint of fresh strawberries: $4.49 or $3.99
32 ounces of frozen strawberries: $2.99

4 ounces of blackberries and 4 ounces of raspberries: roughly $10
24 ounce of frozen "mixed" berries (raspberries and blackberries) : $1.49

Fresh strawberries are nice, but being poor...

Draggar, I never said frozen wasn't CHEAPER. I just said fresh was BETTER.

Admittedly, frozen fruit is better if you are going only by price.

If you are going for nutrition, fresh is far better, as so many nutrients are lost in the freezing process.

If you are going for taste, fresh is far better....though if you are making frozen drinks or smoothies baking some desserts, or something of that ilk, frozen is not bad. But just to eat? Ick. Just my personal (biased) opinion.

(I made a pineapple ginger salad dressing last night for another one of my cookoffs. Ironically, while the ginger and everthing else was fresh, the pineapple was canned.)

I freeze grapes, strawberrys ans raspberries, but because I want to eat them frozen. If you let them defrost befrost before eating is not so good.

With all the frozen vs fresh discussion, I'm curious...could you really dehydrate frozen/thawed fruit and not have it be completely inedible?

Well one of my favorite jerkys is simply strips of beef marinated over night in either teriyaki sauce or a barbecue sauce. Occasionally I have used a whiskey blend to make an adult jerky.

I'll also occasionally make Deer Jerky, Pork Jerky, Fish Jerky (which is actually more of just a dried fish strip). Any meat can really be used just what you like and have at hand.

Rather simple tastes I have...

Why do I think the reply should really start with

Completely inedible? I am guessing no, that it would be edible, just not nearly as tasty. As in not even in the same postal code.

A former kitchen manager of mine once pointed out to me that fruits and vegetables are, by composition, mostly water. Far more so than animals, actually. So freezing then unfreezing them would definitely wreak some havoc on them, especially in the areas of taste and nutrition.
