Saturday was *the small town where my parents live* annual Christmas parade. Think Norman Rockwell. Yes, just like that.
Anyway, after the parade (Excellent this year!) there was a carnival at the local park. My mom, Em and I walked down there. Lots of fun was had!
After 4 hours, we walked back. We passed by a fountain in front of City Hall. Em asked for a quarter, so she could make a wish. I dug into my pocket and gave her a quarter. Em leaned over a bit to make a wish. I could hear her talking, but she was very quiet. She did something with her hands, then she stood up and started to walk away.
I didn't hear any "splash." I looked in the basin; no ripples in the water, no quarter at the bottom.
"Em, did you make a wish?" I asked.
"Yes Daddy. I did."
"You did? Where is the quarter?" I asked her.
"I dunno."
I noticed that her right hand is clenched, and her left one is as well, just not as tightly.
"Em, what's in your hand?" I asked her, amused.
"Oh, nothing."
"May I see your hand?"
"Okay daddy." And she held up her fist.
"Would you open your hand please?"
She opens her hand and there is nothing there! Em giggles.
"It's in this hand, daddy!" she says.
We laugh a bit, then I tell her that her wish won't come true.
"That's okay daddy. I'd rather have the quarter."
My Em palmed the quarter! I have to stop teaching her that kind of stuff. She's too smart for her own good.
Maybe you had to be there. But it was funny as hell.
