Gahh. I am so not wanting to leave my farm for any reason for the next few weeks. I am not wanting to turn on the tv or radio either. Its insanity season again.
I swear it just starts earlier and earlier. We where out earlier and coming back fo town we passed several houses with thei CHRISTMAS LIGHTS and other decorations up. Already. Its not even thanksgiving yet people. The stores and their christmas section up with see santa coming this weekend. Christmas jingles on the muzak. The local radio station has already broken out thier christmas records. The Grinch was on TV already!
I swear its getitng to the point where I'm going to put a giant Santa in the yard that has vampire fangs wearing a black cape and holding a bloody machete in one hand with the head of rudolph in the other. A pilgrim holding a sparkler with giant orange lights blinking all around spelling out the words "Happy Chrismagivoween the 4th"

Ok the lady across the street had her lights put up on Sunday . . .but she in not plugging them in. Apparently her daughter and Son -in-Law are going to see his family for Turkey Day on Thursday. He knows that tradition is Friday after Thanksgiving to hang the lights - however they will not be back till late Sunday. He didn't want her to be without her lights for an extra week so he hung them early. (she isn't able to hang them herself anymore) I don't mind them being up early in this case. (1. it is only a couple of days 2. she isn't turning them on at night till Friday)
With stores I am torn . . . I understand the need to make the most out of the holiday season. The trend now seems to be to have everything bought and wrapped by Dec 1 to avoid the mall crowd.
But, I am torn. I am a traditionalist . . . .Christmas decorations don't go up till after Thanksgiving meal at earliest . . . and need to be put away by Jan 3. The bigger problem that I see is the house that puts up lights . . .and then doesn't take them down until Valentines day or even March is one case.
I have to realize I have a choice . . . I can let it stress me out . . .or I can come here . . .jump on someone's thread . . .vent in agreement . . .and then move on with my life.

Same here. Get this. The house down the street has two giant inflatable snowmen and a santa.
The next house has a giant inflatable turkey.
I hadn't taken down my Halloween crap at the time, so next came pumpkins and spiders.
I swear, it was like the set of Rudolph's Shiny New Year or something.
I took my halloween crap down, but Christmas and Thanksgiving are still battling it out down the street. We look like a confused bunch on my street, let me tell ya.

umm..we already got some of our christmas stuff up. what is the big deal? who cares if somebody else wants to put up christmas decorations. does it really affect you? people love christmas. they like to have the stuff up. i know of somebody who put there stuff up two weeks ago because they absolutely LOVE this holiday, that they can't wait for it to come around. i don't see what the harm is. if you really don't want to see it, just ignore it. in all honesty, i think its not a big deal.
we already put ours up, because we are excited since this is our first year in our new home, and we actually get to decorate. we just went out sunday and bought all the decorations, and my fiance put them up last night.

I don't so much mind people's yards being decorated and their own personal choices, but having it cluttering up the stores and all over the media. All it does is wear out an otherwise lovely holiday and make it tired and shallow. Having to look at ads and sales and things from late September makes people sick of Christmas by the time it actually does roll around. I've already got my car radio on the XM Christmas stations, but no decor is up yet. Mom utterly refuses to let us put up the tree more than a week before the 25th.
As a wonderful old Russian man once told me during a conversation between us and some other customers -
"I remember when Christmas was have nice dinner with family and give thanks for our blessings. Now Christmas is go to Wal-Mart!"

RecoveringKinkoid: Wow that must have been fun to go down your street. All you needed next was a giant inflatable valentine or something. Its hallmark avenue....
Ljt09863: Its not so much that the decorations are up. I personally dont care what a person does in their yard as long as it doesnt come spillign over into my yard (unless they somehow figure out how to grow a real money tree). But it gets a little ridiculous and more so each year. Why bother taking them down at all? Also remember the guy in cincinnati that has the like 2 bazillion light display with music and computer sychros and stuff? Can anyone say overkill? bah humbug.
I'm not overly fond of the way the holidays have become so commercialized and attitude changed form being happy with your family and a little bit of simple decoration into a contest to see who has the biggest and brightest and most moving and most movement display. and All the hype and hoopla and crass gimmie , gimmie, gimmie attitude that the stores all promote. Like the Lady Barbossa said it just makes thigns way too tired and shallow.
i don't see what the harm is. if you really don't want to see it, just ignore it. in all honesty, i think its not a big deal.
Its not really a big deal I guess, it just makes me shake my head at how things have changed even in my lifetime. The holidays used to be about somethign special and a time for families.
I'm also one of those people who have trouble tuning out or ignoring things that bug me or otherwise set me off. Large crowds give me fits to the point where I have to go outside if I hit my exposure limit before I hit somethign or someone else. Personal space is definately a premium with me. Black friday I sit at home curled up with a nice hot cup of mead and watch the news about the lunatics rioting over the latest fad.
Also especially grumpy this year is the first year without my mother around. As she passed away earlier this year and that not a fun thing.
Anyhow. Its just getting to the point where it seems like stores might as well make a section for each holiday and leave it up all year aroud as they are getting to overlap already. I dunno. Anyhow its okay to vent. Bye.

Our neighbor across the street will put up his elaborate display on Thanksgiving. The part that bugs me is our side of the street lost power 7 times (the longest for 32 hrs) last year - we sat freezing in our house to look out and see the massive display still with power - argh.

Thats exactly how I feel. I just feel like the holiday is being stuffed down my throat when i'm not ready.. One of our radio stations already started playing Christmas tunes 24-7 (103.3 for my Mass neighbors:wave:)
It's not a big deal. Decorate away! I just found it a bit extreme that this person put all of their stuff up on 11/1! I guess they'll be skipping turkey day this year lol
I'll decorate in the double digits of December! :)

The next house has a giant inflatable turkey.
There's a GIANT (ten foot?) one down the highway from me. The people have it straddling the peaked roof of their front porch, so it is about twenty feet up in the air. They've hung a huge sign around its neck that says: "Eat Pork"

An outdoor shopping mall near my school has Christmas lights up at the mall and on the trees. The other day when driving home from my parents I saw two guys putting up Christmas lights on a sign. Is

Been in a similar situation, but without festive Christmas lights. Don't you just love it when you're on one circuit and your neighbors are on another?

You just know we're going to see red and pink, at least in our stock rooms, no later than December 30.
