View Full Version : Glasses help?

My current glasses are almost six years old. I've outgrown them (literally...), and they're the way wrong prescription. In January, I'm getting a new pair. They're not my primary eyes - contacts serve that purpose. However, they're my backup pair in case I pull something brilliant like scratch my eye or something.
What kind of frames should I get? I don't want anything too thick, flashy, or outrageous. I also have quite a wide upper-head (must be all those brains :) ).
Without glasses:

With my current glasses: (see how they cut into the sides of my face? That's mildly annoying. They're just...too small I guess?)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I took my mom with me to Lenscrafters and just tried on a bunch of frames. Ironically enough, I ended up with the first pair I picked up, after trying at least 20 other pairs (and of course they were one of the more expensive frames...). Mine are a rounded rectangular shape, the frame is only on top. (Tried to find them on the site but I couldn't.) The ones I had before were kind of like yours, more oval. I noticed the squared-off shape makes my face look less round. And from a distance I can barely see them in the mirror. I wear them all the time, though, so they had to be something I really liked. I know I'm not much help but maybe JAM can give you some pointers...she does do this for a living, after all :)

PM JAM. I do believe she had as her sig once that she could help with stuff like this.
I went in for new glasses last month and my new ones are more squarish. Shockingly I did not see many oval or round frames to pick from. Eyeglasses go through fashion trends just like clothing does.
Your optometrist can also help you pick.

I noticed that too... most of them are more squarish, and there are a lot of the thicker plastic frames in lots of colors (geek chic, I suppose). If you go to a place like Lenscrafters they have people to help you choose. The girl who helped me was great, and the doctor threw in his 2 cents, too. I got several compliments when I wore them to work the first day.

EEEEE! Yay, a thread for me!
...except I'm on my way out the door so I'll have to post pics later. Shopping for you will be easy since we have very similar face shapes- round cheeks and a low bridge... I tend to prefer thick frames but there are plenty of thinner but still trendy frames to choose from. As far as the digging into your face, something with a good spring hinge will help prevent that annoying problem. :)
I'll be back later! :)

True that. Mine aren't that thick around the lenses, but the parts that go over the ears (for lack of the correct term) are thicker and tortoise-shell brown plastic.
And they're made by Timberland. Heh heh. I wouldn't be caught dead in their boots but I can refer to my glasses as my Timberlands.
Ever try color contacts? If you are extremely attached to your glasses, I'd hit up the Cover Girl section of your local eye doctor. I'm sure every optical center has that brand. They are definetly more girly designs, a bit pricey, but you don't have to worry about looking like Urkel or Orville Redenbacker.

You would look great with Charles Nelson Reilly glasses. (http://www.foxnews.com/images/286666/0_61_reilly_charles_nelson.jpg)
Those will come back in style very soon.. you just wait and see
HAHAHAHA
That was a great pun.

Last time I looked at frames, there was maybe one or two styles to choose from. I walked into several frames places and saw literally two styles of frames, and they were similar to each other.
I ended up getting them off the internet. I was looking for Windsors. None locally anywhere. Ordered them from a place that had lots of different types, so that was cool. They had many different types of Windsors, even. So if you know what you want, hunt around on the internet. I was able to simply have my prescription put into them locally. (this place claimed to do lenses, too, but I wear bifocals, and that would be just too risky. ) Just be sure whoever you buy from has a good return policy.
I am thinking a wider, narrower lens would look good on you. That, or rimless specs. Do you have a photo retouch program? You could experiment drawing different shape glasses on your photo to see how they work with your face shape.

I think the style of the glasses you have are cute. They fit what I perceive your personality to be- nice, subtle, etc.
I'd go with something similar if I were you.
Either way- I want pics of the "after"! :D

I'll definitely post pics of the after when I get them.
Blas - I could NEVER do color contacts lol. I have bright blue eyes that people pay money for...naturally! haha...
Because these are my backup 'eyes', I think I can be a little less...conservative with them lol. We'll have to see. I do like the wider, narrower suggestion though. The problem I face with most glasses (no pun intended lol) is that they wind up looking weird because my face is wider than they are. So perhaps going with an inherently wider frame would solve that problem? We'll have to see...

Your eyes do look pretty vivid, now that I've gone back and taken another look. You don't want to cover them up. I'm thinking contacts or rimless.

JAM while you're at it: I've got a rather large noggin to match the rest of me and like TG mine are way past needing to be replaced. The current size frame I have is: Lens 65, bridge 16, and temple 145 (I told you I have a swelled head) Marcolin brand aviator style. My current frames are Titanium as I'm alergic to other metals (including gold and stainless steel) semi-rimless. Normally I wouldn't worry about replacing them but the plastic on the temple pieces are just about worn off and and are hanging by a thread.
I would like to stick with titanium in a very close size, do you have any suggestions.
TG sorry to thread-jack
I didn't mean to offend hunny, I was picturing you with violet contacts and I just thought "Yes!"
I wish I had pretty blue eyes naturally.
Here's a silly question for all ya'll...
If brown eyes are dominant and blue are recessive, why do more people have blue eyes than brown? Just in my department alone at work, out of the 30 or so people we have, about 25 of them have blue eyes, 3 have brown, and 2 have hazel eyes.

Well, actually they don't. The majority of people in the U.S. and in the world, actually, have brown eyes.
In your store or area, there may be more with blue eyes, but that may be a product of the various peoples that settled in your area. In Minnesota, for example, there are many people of Scandinavian descent, so there are going to be a lot of blue-eyed people there. Not so much in Miami's Little Havana though.

Jester is completely correct. If the majority of potential parents in a particular gene pool are pick-your-own-recessive, then the majority of children will be that-same-recessive.
Odd fact: gray, blue, green and hazel eyes are those colours because of a lack of melanin. The blue colour is the back of the eye, as seen through the iris. Gray, green and hazel eyes have enough melanin to tint the blue, but not enough to completely block it.
Odd fact two: we have two different shades of melanin, 'brown' and 'red'. Red melanin but not brown produces red hair (and green eyes, because red melanin filters the back-of-the-eye shade in a way that makes green eyes). Brown melanin produces brown hair with no hint of red, and brown eyes. Both red and brown melanin at their darkest produces black hair and deep brown/black eyes. At paler shades, the pair of melanins combined produces the various shades of reddish hair. Blonde hair has very small amounts of brown melanin. Strawberry blonde has small amounts of both.

Interesting, Seshat. That makes sense though.
I'm fair-skinned, blonde hair, blue eyes, and have freckles. And I burn like nobody's business lol.
And Blas - no problems. It's hard to see what eyes really look like in a picture like that. They actually get a little bit of a yellow coloring to them when I'm out in the sun. It's crazy.

Hmmmm.....this could explain something. My eyes are basically a pale grey-green, but lately a lot of people have been swearing that my eyes are blue. I know I am slightly colorblind, but blue is a color I can see very clearly, and I have never looked in the mirror and seen blue eyes staring back at me. (At least not when I was alone.) Is it possible that since, as you say, green eyes don't have enough melanin to completely block the blue, sometimes, in certain situations, my eyes actually are looking blue to these people?
Could both of us be right, when I insist that my eyes are green and they tell me, no, they're blue?

I'm going to look at my frame boards and catalogues on my break today, when I get back from work maybe I'll have some pics to post.

Blood flow can affect your eye color as well. Depending on my mood and stress levels my eyes can be anywhere from almost white-grey to royal blue. It has to with both dilation of your pupil, as most people have a dense ring of pigment at the outside of the iris, so if your pupil is wide open your eyes will look darker in general, and blood flow to the iris. When I am happy my eyes are a very pretty royal blue, but when I get ticked off they go very pale grey. Fiance knows that if my eyes are grey it is best to just leave me alone and let me cool off.
