A few weeks ago, I fell in love.

With a puppy.

I am not a dog person, but I do think puppies are cute. A few weeks ago, I was taking care of the outside garbages at work when I see this guy holding a puppy.

I asked if I could pet her (her name was Daisy), and he said I could HOLD her.

I held her like a baby, butt on my arm and head on my shoulder. She fell asleep like that. It was just the cutest thing. I asked, jokingly, if I could keep her. They said yes. If only...lol.

The thing is, I never asked what breed she was. I would guess she was a Lab, except that she was RED. Not brown. Seriously red. I checked out Wikipedia (I know, I know!), but they weren't any help.

I know this is a shot in the dark, but does anyone have any ideas?

If I had to guess, I'd say Chesapeake Bay Retriever. One mated with our dog once; he was really really red. But in case I'm wrong:

There are red labs called Fox Red Labs and they can be very red.

Can you describe more details?

I'm thinking of a few breeds this could be but I need to know..

What did her ears look like?
Did she have any white or black markings on her?
Long or short hair?
Small puppy?

There is of course the possibility that she was a mutt.

There aren't really any more details to give. She was a pure red, short haired Lab looking puppy. I think she weighed about 20ish lbs.

Sorry.

Like I said, I knew it would be a shot in the dark.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks look kind of like red labs.

Where in the bloody hell did you get this doggie? My dad literally searched the country for a breeder that had a red lab, and he paid for our dog Sooner (from a breeder in Oklahoma) because she looked really red in her pictures. He got all pissed when she turned all yellowish; and now she's pretty much just a yellow. But her ears and a lot of other areas are red; some are yellow; and her butt is white like a deer.

But we love her to death. She has a reddish shade right now since it's fall; and she looks more yellow in the summer. I love my 85 lb. baby girl.

Just a bit of boring FYI for you. Yellow, chocolate, and black are the only three colors recognized by the American Kennel Club if you want to be a snob about it like my dad. Since red hair is a rare hair color for humans; the same goes for animals; including labs. It's a bit of genetic mutation or something. But I'm a horrible science person so don't jump all over me; I'm speaking in general here. There's actually a lab called "silver" that my dad is now looking for.

Kerrisan, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are like labs with curlier hair. I've seen a lot because duh, I live right next to the Bay. They're usually boxier and my dad says they're dumber. But he's extremely biased because we have this beautiful girl right here. (http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s299/Ifeltsry4u/colleen007.jpg) She's getting gray and she's wrinkly because she has these folds of extra skin she never really grew into. :p

FYI, Goose, a 'silver lab' is just a crappily bred yellow lab. The color washes out unless a breeder takes care to keep proper coloration. If he wants a 'silver lab' I suggest he get on the waiting list of a local lab rescue and wait for a litter of backyard bred pups. Oprah Winfrey's 'white Golden Retrievers' are the same thing- poorly bred Goldens that would be laughed out of any dog show. Similarly, a red lab is not actually red, as the gene for red coats does not exist in Labrador Retrievers. A red lab is a poorly bred yellow lab that went the other direction in its coat color- just a dark, reddish yellow lab. A lab that is actually genetically red is likely not a purebred and has been mixed with a dog like a Redbone Coonhound somewhere in its background.

As for the puppy the OP saw- my guess is Rhodesian Ridgeback or Redbone Coonhound. Both can look very lab-like and be very red when young. Of course, could be a mix.

A family I used to babysit for had a red lab (they named him Clifford), but he was really more like a yellow lab with a little bit of reddish tint, not true red.

When I think red dogs I think Irish Setters. They have longer hair, though, especially on their ears.

Am I the only one who was hoping this thread was about finding a name for your new puppy and there would be pictures?

EscapeArtist (lol!), sorry for being a tease. I wish I had my wits about me and had taken pics of the puppy (and her older brother). I was just caught up in the moment.

She was probably either :

a) A red Golden Retriver (they have short hair when their pups and can look very similiar to lab pups)

b) A genuine Red Lab

c) A Rhodesian Ridgeback (but you would have seen the "ridge" on her back with the hair growing the opposite direction)

d) A mutt

Try puppyfind.com...they have lots of pictures that could help. :)

EscapeArtist (lol!), sorry for being a tease.

That's the second time I've seen someone use that this week. I kinda like it. I've been wanting to change my name...was thinking along other lines but I might have to think on it some more....:)

Re: Puppyfind.com

Sure, look there for cute puppy pictures, but please god whatever you do, don't mistake 99% of breeders on there for anything but the BYBs (backyard breeders) they are. If you want to get a puppy that is similar to the short haired red dog that you met, either try a shelter or look for a reputable breeder of Rhodesians or Redbone Coonhounds (the only two really RED shorthaired AKC breeds) who does all available health testing, OFA certifies hips and shoulders, and shows all breeding stock to championships if possible.

Well, not necessarily. My sister had one that I am sure was not pure. It was a rescue. It had all the markings and personality traits of a Ridgeback, but was missing a distinct ridge. Probably why she ended up as a rescue in the first place.

Fine, fine dog that was.

Actually, even a purebred Rhodesian Ridgeback can be ridgeless. However, for show purposes, the absence of a ridge is a disqualifying factor, and ridged dogs that produce ridgelessness in their pups are generally removed from a breeding program because the ridgeless pups cannot be shown.
