View Full Version : My first vodka contest.....

As some of you know, I enjoy a good contest. For example, I have been in the last ten of a local bar's monthly cookoffs, placing five times (two firsts and three thirds), and have my 11th tomorrow. (The cookoff was featured in a local magazine this month, and while I was not named, two of my dishes were mentioned in the article, and more importantly, a third of my dishes was featured in one of the two photos accompanying the article.)

I have also competed in three bartending contests. Not the kind where you are doing all kinds of bottle tricks, but the kind where you are tasked with creating a new and original cocktail using the sponsoring company's product. All three of these were sponsored by rum companies, and as I am a rum guy, I didn't do too badly: 1st place in my very first bartending contest, DNP in the second, and fourth in the third.

Tonight I competed in my very first vodka bartending contest, sponsored by Finlandia Vodka. This was definitely one of the more organized contests I've been involved with, as Finlandia has been doing this for a while, and really had things down, and as organized as such a chaotic thing can be. I was one of 9 bartenders competing, with the top three getting cool prizes, the top one being a trip to Finland to compete with winners from other U.S. States. And even though I hate the cold, and the trip to Finland is at the end of January, naturally I wanted to win. Heck, I would not mind going to Finland, even in January!

My three cocktails were well received, even my apertif which I had the least confidence in of my three. Sadly, however, I did not place in the top three. (I tried to find out where I placed afterwards, but kind of got blown off. No biggie....I just hope I didn't come in 9th out of 9!) I DID do better than I thought, and was proud of all three of my cocktails....especially since I had never tasted them beforehand, but merely formed the recipes in my head ahead of time. (Though I did taste test and adjust the recipe of my apertif shortly before the contest began.)

The guy who won is apparently damn good....he has won the big local tequila bartending contest the last two Cinco de Mayos. So naturally, he is going to be the guy to beat in future contests.

There were definitely some interesting creations, some of which I liked, some of which I didn't, but all the competitors were really cool, and were often helping each other out in various ways. Which you don't always see in these types of situations.

Also, there were some very innovative things done. The guy who won actually had one drink that had a HUGE piece of ginger root on the rim of the glass as a garnish. (Yes, there was ginger in the drink as well.) But the Jester Award for Thinking WAAY Outside the Box goes to the girl from Orlando: on her dessert drink, she rimmed the martini glass with vanilla cake frosting and brown sugar. Two words: Yum! Mee! :D

And I did not walk away empty-handed. In addition to learning a lot and gaining a lot of experience for my next contest, I also got a messenger bag with a Finlandia keychain, some Finlandia literature (being a non vodka drinker, I will probably read this and toss it! ), a couple of Finlandia pins, a bottle of Finlandia Mixed Berries Fusion Vodka (we got to pick which flavor we would take, and this was the most palatable to me), and a cool Finlandia "Bartenders are Gods" t-shirt, which I had actually seen before and always wanted.

Oh, and one hell of a late night onset hangover. I crashed at my friend's place for a few hours downtown, as I was pretty lit. :drink: And now my brain is doing laps around my skull.

Well done Jester! Obviously to myself and other aspiring bartenders out there, you are a hero. Even if you didn't win a trip to Finland. Hell, even if you placed 9th out of 9 it takes a lot of guts and a lot of knowhow to create your own cocktail that can stand up to experienced competition.

Keep us posted on tomorrow's today's cook-off and any future competitive endeavors.

It's five thirty in the morning. I should go to bed. :o

Good luck!

Congrats on the placings and the endeavoring itself Jester!

Oh, and one hell of a late night onset hangover.

Were there other alcohols present? I don't think I've ever had a vodka hangover (at least, not from a top shelf vodka :) ).

Sadly, my only real contribution to the drinking world after almost twenty years of on and off bartendering was the 'Santa Ana.' Basically a kamikaze with takillya instead of vodka (or a mini margarita) No big whoop on the recipe, but I thought the name was extra clever.

Were there other alcohols present?

Of course. They would have been pretty boring drinks, for the most part, without other booze. The only restrictions in the contest were that we could not use any other vodka besides the Finlandia ones provided, nor could we use any liquor with "vodka" in the name, and that each drink could have only a maximum of five ingredients, including drops and dashes, but not including garnishes.

And there were some wild ingredients and garnishes, including eggnog, pink grapefruit, pomegranate reduction, frozen blackberries, ginger root, ginger, vanilla icing and brown sugar (I mentioned that one already, I think), muddled cucumbers, basil.....just all over the spectrum.

My ingredients were a little less out of the box: in addition to using four of the fruit fusion vodkas in my three drinks, also used Cointreau, Godiva chocolate liqueur, Bailey's, apricot brandy, pineapple juice, cranberry juice, lime twists, cocoa powder for a rim, and a triple berry pick. If anyone is interested, I could post the actual recipes of my three concoctions.

Anything involving chocolate sounds yummy to me (although, that chocolate martini was my undoing on my birthday a few years ago - the only time in my life I've been drunk enough to get sick...)

I'd be interested in seeing/reading the recipes, as we do enjoy making interesting cocktails at a friend's holiday parties. :) Oh, and also, congrats on all the above-mentioned honors. That's pretty darn cool.

I'd be interested in seeing/reading the recipes...

Why not?

The Apri-Tif

3/4 oz. Finlandia Lime Fusion Vodka
3/4 oz. apricot brandy
1/2 oz. Cointreau

Shake ingredients over ice.
Strain into a martini glass.
Garnish with a lime twist.

This drink was the one I had the least confidence in, but it came out pretty damn good after some tweaking, and while it was probably not a true apertif, I kinda like it....as did others.

The Island Finn

1-1/2 oz. Finlandia Mango Fusion Vodka
1/2 oz. Finlandia Cranberry Fusion Vodka
1-1/2 oz. pineapple juice
1-1/2 oz. cranberry juice
dash bitters

Combine ingredients in tall glass over ice.
Shake.
Serve over ice in tall glass.
Garnish with a maraschino cherry

Very refreshing summer drink. At least, that is what they tell me. I'm not sure if I ever actually TRIED this one! And yes, I know it's winter....but it's still pretty much summer HERE! :D

The Chocolate Berry Blast

2 oz. Finlandia Wild Berries Fusion Vodka
1/4 oz. Bailey's Irish Cream
1/4 oz. Godiva Chocolate Liqueur

Shake ingredients over ice.
Rim martini glass with unsweetened cocoa powder.
Strain drink into rimmed martini glass.
Garnish with a "triple berry pick": plastic pick spearing, in order, blueberry, raspberry, blueberry, strawberry quarter, blueberry.

Chocolate and berries...how can you go wrong with that combination? My personal opinion: the best of my three, hands down. Make one and tell me you don't want to have a second one.

In other news that I am not going to bother starting a new thread for, it was a fun cookoff tonight. While my version of my mother's spaghetti pie was very well received, sadly, I did not place in the top 3. But everyone had fun, we raised more money for another worthy charity, I got stuffed, my niece had fun playing sous chef again, my friends and acquaintances were once again impressed with my culinary talent, I got many compliments on said pie, a first-timer at the cookoff took third place (which is how I started off, ironically), I came in with my lowest budget in any of the previous cookoffs, I started late and finished early, I left no mess for my roommates to complain about, and one person actually asked for the recipe for said pie. All in all, other than placing, a very good cookoff indeed.

Bonus: Tiny Dancer from the Human Pinata thread was there, tasting my cooking for the first time, and enjoying one of her first real nights out since her life took a belly flop over the weekend. It was good to see her smiling again. :D

I just got an email from the Finlandia Vodka contest organizers, with all the scores of all the participants listed. I am not sure if they sent this to everyone or it was because I specifically asked for my placing, as I was curious (and my ego wanted to know that I did not come in last!).

In any case, some interesting things. First of all, there was a score for the drinks, PLUS a score for crowd participation. This irritated me, as nowhere in my informational packet did it say this, or I would have texted every single one of my friends to be there cheering me on.

That being said, the crowd participation scores, while downgrading me slightly, in the end did NOT make a difference. I could have tied with the highest crowd participation score and still not moved up from where I was slotted. It was just annoying not to know everything going in. (There was other information I was not informed about, but I was able to adjust on the fly, and that did not affect me.)

The good news, and I am thrilled to report this: out of the 9 competitors, with three placing, I finished tied for fourth in overall score, and I was alone in fourth place for my drink score. That is pretty freakin' cool, if you ask me. :D
