I did an order-in and then pick-up from the Outback Steakhouse about 10 minutes from my house.

For the record, I ordered 1 blooming onion with ranch (not horseradish) sauce, 1 Outback special - 12 oz. Medium cooked (this becomes important), 1 Alice Springs Chicken & 1 Kid's Meal chicken fingers.

I get there, pay by credit card, and come home, total tops, it takes me about 15-20 minutes getting there, waiting for a bit, getting home (hitting all the green lights - GO ME!).

Come home, and the food is all arranged on our coffee table in our family room. Hubby starts to eat his 12 oz. sirloin. He notices it's not Medium (which, if I can rememeber correctly, it's got a nice pink color in the middle). The sirloin looked like it was medium well, or even well (there was no pink in the middle at all). Hubby complains to *me* that the steak isn't how he likes it (I'm on the phone with my mom at this point discussing the finer points of the Outback Menu).

I hang up, find the phone # for the restaurant, and ask to speak to the manager. I'm polite (heck, they even accidentally hung up on me, but they had my cell phone # and called right back). I wanted to let them know that my husband's Medium steak isn't Medium. The manager apologizes. I was like: "That's alright. I just wanted to let you know." Then the manager refunded my husband's Outback Special entree! Go Me again! (I wasn't looking for a credit, I just wanted to let them know they might have to re-train the cook or something).

After I hung up, hubby was like: "You embarrassed me with you calling up like that."

I looked him right in the eye: "If we'd been at the restaurant, would you have complained about the dinner to me?" He said "Yes." Then I said: "You know, I would have mentioned it there also."

But he kept insisting that I embarrassed him! MEN!

im not disagreeing with you but

could it be that in the 15-20 minutes it took from the time the order was picked up until it was eaten that the steak could have gone past medium.... continued cooking in the heat of the package?

Not sure Kiwi ... It might have ... The reason I called was because my husband was disgusted with the steak, looked like a little boy who had just lost his puppy and was whining that he didn't like the steak. This coming from a man who will eat just about anything.

Plus, my round trip from house to restaurant and back was 15-20 minutes. So I'd say my drive back was no more than 10 minutes, if that ... so I don't know if that makes any difference.

Steaks, (and some other cuts as well-roasts being one) will continue to cook even after you take them off of the direct heat. They will cook even more if kept at a high temperature after being taken off of the grill. The cook might not have known that the steak was to-go, cooked it properly, but the steak continued to cook as you took it home to hubby.

And now you know.
