Because I haven't posted enough yet today....oh well
I'm planning on going to Dragon Con. This will be my first comic book convention ever. Any suggestions on things I should make sure to do? I figure I should get my tickets and hotel rooms booked as soon as possible but other than that (or even advice about that) anyone know of anything I should know/be warned of?

DragonCon?
Check all your morals and inhibitions at the door. You won't be needing them ;)

hahaha. So I take it that means it's going to be awesome? Any suggestions on places to stay and such?

Downtown Atlanta can be kind of rough at night, so travel in groups and be careful.
Also, the traffic is terrible in Atlanta, so find a place to park where you can walk to the con and leave your car there. Between walking and Marta, you won't really need your car. Everything at Dragon is right there close.
Good news is, Dragon is a lot of fun! So stay safe and have a good time! :D
I can't really recommend a hotel, because I haven't gone to Dragon enough times to have a good feel for hotels. I just know the few times I've been, I stayed right there on Peachtree so I could walk. Parking, however, was very expensive at the hotel, so it might be cheaper to park in one of the lots nearby. Start looking for hotels NOW, so you can compare prices. This ain't gonna be cheap.

I'm going with a huge guy friend so I'm good with the not being alone part. With hearing about how the traffic is it's making me debate taking a train but I don't like being without my car if I don't have to be so still debating. Definetly want to reserve stuff as early as possible to avoid hassle. So there are lots nearby that I can part in? Are they like public parking garages or something similar?

There are some lots near the hotels, but I don't know about overnight parking (15 min drive for me to get there), but the hotels should have parking on site.
BTW: Have you looked here (http://www.dragoncon.org/)? They have lists of local hotels.
ETA: This link (http://www.dragoncon.org/dc_location.php#Host_Hotels) offers discount codes for the hotels.

Last I was down there, there were "event lots" open. You know, give a guy x number of dollars per day and so forth. Within walking distance.
Just leave in plenty of time, don't get stressed, and just take your time on the roads. Be aware that there will be a lot of backtracking, because downtown Atlanta has so many "no left turn" streets. You'll be okay. Now that you have a heads up on it, the traffic probably wont' seem as bad to you as you are probably imagining. It's sucky, but doable.

Turns out the Discworld convention my mom and I are going to is at the other half of that week so it's looking like driving back to illinois from georgia so I can yet again go half way accross the US in a different direction is going to be silly so I guess I'll just take a train much though I really don't like having my car. I'm going to need the down time inbetween.
Everyone is being so helpful! Thanks!

Another forum I run - the rules are somewhat more relaxed and the inmates are more ... pouncy. Feel free to browse and stuff, and feel free to register and talk. There are many threads about many conventions there.

I highly reccomend reading the DragonCon Livejournal. Not more than a week back there was a newcomer asking for tips on attending and there was some very good advice given.

Please feel free to ask me any questions. I might not know all the answers as I only just started going to DragonCon last year, but I'll do my best.
You've got your room already booked, yes?

Part Time Parrothead - I am a card carrying Wench (look at my sig line) of course I go Kilt hunting.
We are debating borrowing one of her most wonderful ideas and trying to figure out a way to make a battery powered leaf blower look like a sheep. (has to do with one of my friends Renn personas)
And yes, I do know girls who put mirrors on their shoes.
Happy Happy Joy Joy Irish fest is only a few weeks away . . .lots of Men in Kilts.
