Sorry, need to have a bit of a rant here, and need some advice.
We got a water bill recently, it was for the past four months so it was quite...large. I asked my roommates if one of them could sort it out, seeing as I already pay the electric, gas, phone and Internet (they all pay me their share, but Jesus, its a fight to get the money off them)
Oh wait...whats that in the post...a reminder! I tell them that one of them needs to sort it out.
Another reminder!
ANOTHER reminder!
ANOTHER reminder, with a note saying we have 72 hours to pay the bill before they pass it onto legal representatives.
Two days later, they STILL haven't paid the bill. I am NOT paying it, I can't afford it seeing as I have enough getting taken out of my account. But every time I tell them to sort it out, they just give me a blank stare.
There are THREE of them, why can't one of them sort out the god damn bill? I have now pinned the bill on the wall, and they are still not getting the hint.
I can't wait to get my own place.

They'll change their tune when the water gets shut off.

AND they have to pay the reconnect fee.

If the water bill is in your name, you're legally bound to pay it. You can go after them later, but it's all on you.

Its in no ones name. Its addressed to someone who doesnt live at the house anymore.

Someone better take care of it. Otherwise you're fucking with someone else's life. Excuse my language.

Why is it still in the name of someone who is no longer living in the house? Fashion Lad makes a good point. This person is the one who will have to deal with the financial consequences. I think the time for passive aggressive "hinting" is past. Sit your deadbeat roommates down and collect the money. I agree you shouldn't have to be responsible for every bill, but someone has to do it and this one needs to get done. Afterwards you should all have a serious discussion about who pays what when and setting some hard and fast rules.

Honestly, I liked being the one in charge of bills, because I got to see how much we owed, and make sure things were split up fairly. Also, since it's relatively simple math, with a calculator, to just split the bill evenly between each of you. I can understand wanting someone else to write the check - or you could each write checks for part of it. But no reason to screw a stranger's credit.
Also, your roommates suck. :p

I like having one flat fee for my apartment. Everything included. I don't have to pay three seperate bills anymore. And I live alone, so if I don't pay, it's my own fault. And I don't have to worry about asshole ex roomate anymore.
It's a HUGE chunk of change to live where I live, but I can take a bath and a shower every day, wash my dishes every day without worrying over the cost of water, I can turn on my stove light before I go out on the weekends and leave it on all night long, and above all, I can TURN MY HEAT ON! As long as it's not at like 80 degrees for days straight, I never get dinged for it. I can be warm!

You'd love it at my place. We have the heat on 3 (it goes from 0-8) and the last week it's been hot as hell in here (even factoring in the fact that I was sick and had a fever for 3 days). The last couple day's have been nice cuz it's freezing outside.
Our rent includes everything, too. We only pay the electric (which so far has been around $45 a month) and cable/internet/phone, which are all one bill. Electric is in my name and the cable, etc. are in my roommate's. We each write a check for our part of the rent and mail them in together (I pay more cuz I have the big room). The cable bill comes a couple weeks before the electric, so she pays the cable bill, then I pay the electric bill and then pay her back the difference. So far things have been very simple.

Our heat is hot water based, and is included in our rent. Now that mine finally works properly, I love it, as it heats, but without being insanely hot. One of my guy friends, who also lives in the complex, just in a different building, however has the same heat, but his has only two settings - ice cold, or gates of Hades. I love hanging out over there, abusing his Tivo, smoking indoors  and all that, but I hate that we have to open the door to keep the temperature bearable.

Bills all paid now :D One of my roommates freaked out when she saw I wasn't going to budge and VERY quickly got on the phone.
Can't wait until I get my own place in August :D

Do you know this person, or is it just some guy who used to live there?
What kind of farkwit leaves a utility hooked up in his name and then moves, leaving his credit in the hands of strangers?
I don't know how sorry I'd feel for someone whose credit got screwed up by doing this.

The guy I work with...
He told me that when he was in college he lived in an apartment with some other guys, and when he moved out they left the gas bill in his name. And didn't pay it. It ended up in collections.
