Oh that is one of my worst fears. My front door does not catch right and I'm so afraid it will come open one day and my dogs will escape. They are so clueless.
Cats seem to be smarter than dogs when it comes to being careful outside, hopefully your kitty will come back soon.

five hours later, and he still isn't back....I WANT MY CAT BACK!
we looked, and we just can't find him. we have food sitting out back, but it hasn't been touched. we can't just jump int he car and drive until we see him, cause there is only one road here, and the rest are driveways. its a wooden area, so im wondering how good my chances really are of finding him....

Oh NO!
Can you call the local police and report a missing cat? Ok maybe that sounds silly....but when Bear ran away years ago, we called the police. Although we ended up finding her at the feedmill a few blocks away, noshing away at feed and garbage and rolling around in some long grass.
One day, we were getting fuel oil delivered, and we needed to leave the garage door open for that. Dad forgot to let Baby in, and we thought she ran away.
We never thought to look under the cars. She spent the whole day hiding under my dad's Toyota.

I'd at least call the local SPCA, then if somebody brings your kitty in they can call you. That's the first step we always took when one of ours when missing.

I second alerting all the shelters in the area. Leave a description of him (and possibly even a picture if you have one) and your contact info.
I'm assuming he's a boy cat correct? Boy cats tend to wander (my INDOOR cat got out once and he didn't come back for 2 weeks) in search of females (even if he's nuetered) so try not to get too worried yet.
Also try asking your neighbors. Is there a possibility that he could have gotten into a shed or something and gotten locked in by accident?
I hope kitty comes home safe and sound soon. :)

:( I hope your kitty comes home.
Before my old kitty died, he would *not* go outside. You could have the door completely open, and he wouldn't escape. Kind of odd really, since before I brought him home from Grandma's, he was *always* outside. It must have been the dogs next door, or the traffic and other people he didn't like. He'd freak out even if he was just on the porch...and wanted back in the house.
Snow is another story. I'm sure she wants outside. But since she's deaf, it's not happening. Too many big dogs and idiot drivers to worry about.
