My mom got the stupidest email the other day. I put it in italics to differentiate it from my own words.
Hello,

Hope you are doing fine? My name is ( SGT 1ST CLASS )Thomas Allen Hoffman, I'm among the United Nations Troop that is currently in Iraq for rescuing operations. I am serving in the millitary army's 3RD Infantary division.

I would like to entrust a sum of about $7 M. USD on you, I am ready to compensate you with 20% of the total money. It is no stolen money, it is a share I got from the money found by my partner and I, we found this money in a box in a Farmhouse near one of Saddam's old palace in TIKRIT-IRAQ during a rescue operation. I need you to help keep this fundS because I do not want to keep the money in my possesion right now to avoid suspicions from our government.

Please check this below link to know more about the money;

I am still here in Iraq, I want the funds to be out of here ASAP for security reasons, It is possible to transfer it to you with ease. And as soon as I leave here, I'd come over to meet you. Please, only attend to a message you are sure is from me due to the various kind of risk/fraud that could arise from Internet fraud. So let me know as soon as possible if this is possible.

Regards
Sgt. Thomas

So basically he's willing and ready to entrust a complete stranger over the internet with 7 million dollars that he stole from Iraq. Oh, I'm sorry, FOUND. I especially liked the second last line about internet fraud. My mom and I LOL'd.

That's a twist on a common scam. Usually they originate from Nigeria.

$10 says it did come from Nigeria. You're right that it's not all that common any more. The Saddam's Gold scam letters went away pretty quick.

There's always a good ol' Nigerian Prince/Despot waiting in the wings though!

I haven't gotten a Nigerian Prince letter yet, but I think it's hilarious because how do these people think any honest person would ever email someone they don't know and ask them to hold all this money for them? "Here's 7 million dollars, and I'm going to give it to YOU, perfect stranger on the internet!"
For some reason my mom gets more of these letters than I do. :)

So it's not stolen, it's all completely legit, but they have to do it this way to avoid government suspicions? Um, OK, sure. Why not?

Sadly, people apparently do fall for these kinds of things. How desperate and/or gullible do you have to be?

I've had so many relatives die in car crashes in Nigeria, that I've authorized the attorneys who contact me to transfer all of the deceased's assets to the Nigerian government to be used for road repairs.

< I now return you to the topic at hand>

You would think that they would try using better English if they really thought it all would work.

and then there is the new one where you get a phone call because of a problem with your tax return (here in the US it is getting to be tax payment time)
And if you don't give them your name and social and banking info they will fine you and you will lose everything you own . . .

we need to bleach the gene pool again

I like the UN Troop part. Because we all know that the UN is there in full force.

Disclaimer: That was not meant as a slight at the UN, Mulitlateralism, or anyone who did not support the war. It was only meant to point out the ignorance of spammers, who aren't clever enough to check their info.

Actually, a couple of years back there was a Dutch ring doing the exact same thing from the Netherlands.

Mind you, they were all Nigerian immigrants. That one amused me for a while.

Must suck to be an honest Nigerian, though. You'd never be trusted anywhere.
