Odd situation here, and I could be making a mountain from a molehill, but it's just weird.

I was at the DMV Thursday, and they asked if they had told me about 'the abandoned property' last time I was in. I told them no, and was handed a slip of paper with an 888 number on it. Apparently, there's this dealio where if you owe someone money or have something that belongs to them/they inherited, you can notify them if you know their DL or social security number.

And honestly, we can't think of anyone who would 'owe' me anything, as all my employers have given me all the paychecks I earned, and I don't sell stuff or anything like that.

What the 'rents think it might be is this -

I'm adopted. I've been with my parents since I was five days old. My biological mother was homeless and had a drug abuse problem. The man who claimed he was my father resembles me in absolutely no way at all, but my parents say that he had a friend who hung around with them, and that I resemble said friend more and more all the time. But the fact is, bio Mum was dirt poor and so was the guy who claimed me (Though I have him to thank for the fact that I never went into the foster system; he was adamant about me having a proper home and family)

Anywho, parents think that perhaps my bio family might be trying to find me, but who knows. I'm 24. You'd think they would have maybe tried when I was 18.

I dunno, does this seem odd to anyone else? I'm curious about the whole thing but kind of hesitant to call the number.

Call the number. In my experience, you regret things you don't do more than the things you do.

Have someone else call the number on your behalf, if you like. Just in case something happens that you would prefer to be shielded from.

Maybe your Dad can call - a male voice often puts off people who are expecting a female voice. And if the number turns out to be some neutral place, such as a public trustee or a lawyer's office, he can just hand you the phone.

Google the number. If it is tied to anything it should pop up.

Usually is the Office of the Treasurer of the state or provice you live in. They then tell you how to prove that it's you, and what your property is and how to claim it.
