First, let me state that I love fast cars. Love 'em. I need to sell my motorcycle to get another one, but that's another story. My love of good old fashioned horsepower does not include making big noise in the middle of a residential area in the middle of the night, however.
I have already called the police twice tonight. The assholes in the civics and wrx's are still tearing ass up and down my street with reckless abandon, and it's been over an hour since the first call. I think I'm going to call the cops back and ask them what caliber rifle would be best suited to piercing an engine block. That might get them out here! Pricks.

Yeah, I would not do that.:( I mentioned something like that once before, and they came out alright. Luckily all I got was a talking too. And also they told me that they will patrol the area on different days/nights and at different times.

That, my friend, is why I have this dandy little paintball gun. And when I'm out of the C2 cartridges, I do have a slingshot.
A 'tater in the muffler when they finally park isn't going to hurt the 'tater much.

You're not the only one. I hear that crap all the time here at night--mostly on the main drag about a mile away. There, or on Route 51. Plenty of fools with riced out Civics, Cavaliers, and other economy cars over that way. I still find it amusing that they'll put a fart can on one of those things...and then get out-dragged by my 1959 Radio-Flyer wagon at the lights...

I was kidding. :)
I mentioned in another thread about the body that was dumped a few blocks from my place, and for a while the police were out here in force 24/7. No racing then. :D It's a shame it takes a murder to get them to patrol here regularly. :(

Oh yes, they are riced out. The only 4-poppers that I think sound OK are the WRX's. The rest sound like pissed off bumblebees.
Speaking of 'vettes, I recently noticed that C5 Z06's can be had for under $30K. HMMMMM...........:D

I've noticed how cheap they can get for only having a couple miles on them. It's AWESOME!!! Too bad I'm only in my second year of college and I won't be able to afford one for awhile.

Oooooh I do so HATE street racers and their rice cars! I think you should go out there in a big heavy American made car, blasting some AC/DC, and casually drive past them as if they're standing still, then turn around and go home.

.50 cal would penetrate an engine block quite nicely
On a more erious note noise at night is one of the things people complain at me the most because (unless you're on a night shift) you reall need to sleep.
Are there not any offenses being comitted merely by having the exhaust too loud, would you be able to mount pressure on the police to have some traffic units available on their usual nights to turn all the vehicles over* and check each one for any/all violations?

I know it has been requested that units patrol late on weekend evenings, they just don't seem to think it's a priority. Wait until one of these little hellions causes a nasty crash. Maybe they will take it seriously then.:(

Keep nagging, get in touch with a local government repersentitive, especially if you're in an urban/residential area, is there a local neighbourhood officer that you can talk to, can you go to the press?

I nag nearly every weekend, as I'm sure my neighbors do. I'm sure there's an officer who patrols here, I just don't know who it is. Even so, I'm sure he/she is well aware of the problem.
The press isn't a bad idea, though. I might try that. :)

Take several pics over an evening. Video if you can. Note times like when they start, when you call the cops, when the cops show (if they do), and when they stop. A nice little 'racers terrorize quiet neighborhood, police refuse to respond' hit piece by a local media outlet should turn up the heat a bit. Offer to let the media outlet use your house for an evening to spy on the festivities if you have a good view of it. Most local news stations would jump at an opportunity like that.

First off, something I have to get out of the way.
That, my friend, is why I have this dandy little paintball gun. And when I'm out of the C2 cartridges, I do have a slingshot.
Please, take that gun out of your car. Two reasons. One, anybody using a paintball gun in a crime, if caught, is charged as if they had used an actual firearm. Two, and more importantly to me: You have NO idea AT ALL how hard actual paintballers work to try and create a good reputation for our sport. For every charity game or good news report on a local field bringing us one step closer, there's some ignorant idiot who shoots a passing car or a house FOR WHATEVER REASON that takes us ten steps backwards. There are two things that piss off paintballers for this very reason: people who think it's fun to prank unprotected people with a paintball gun, and people who carry them around for revenge.
Just don't do it. You may think nothing of it, but you have no idea how potentially damaging it is to us. You think I'm kidding? Paintball guns came this close to being banned in both Canada and several states last year after people were using them inappropriately.
That said, back on topic. Back home, rice rockets aren't all that common, since a little coup with no ground clearance gets OWNED by our roads and winters. Sadly, this has just made the ricers rice up small and mid-size pickups.
And is it too much to ask to be able to commute in a red Civic coupe without every other red light being a racing challenge? Whoopee, your car sounds fun. Good for you, want a sticker? Just let me go to work in peace, argh!

The last fast car I had was a GM F-body with around 400 hp. The rice crowd loved to try to pick a fight on freeway onramps. They got owned. Of course, I'd get up to fwy speeds and leave it at that, riceboy would have to do the 100 mph flyby with some poser hanging out the passenger window thowing "gang signs"or whatever.
Funny thing though, when I took it to the track to do some real heads up racing, the ricers would avert their eyes when I pulled up. They didn't want to play anymore.;)

It wasn't so bad when I still had the old Crown Vic, aka the DethKar. All I had to do was put my foot down for a second and let all 8 give a good blast, and that was usually it.
But what I find surprising is how many people bug me when I'm driving around in a service van. Yeah, I'm totally gonna race you driving a POS Astro WITH MY EMPLOYER'S NAME AND CONTACT INFO PAINTED ON EVERY SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, AND WITH THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OF EQUIPMENT IN THE BACK. Right, tool, fuck off.

Well, what else can we blame (other than nitrous oxide) for the things that some of those fools do to the cars? Cut springs? Check. Fugly bodykits and graphics? Check. Putting a monster wing on a front-wheel-drive economy car? Check.
I guess that answers that :)

Well, unless you're getting up around 70-90 MPH, it doesn't give enough enhancement to make up for the extra drag. But ricers don't care about physics until the car hits the rail.

Ah, the Topaz. The "upmarket" version of Ford's shitty Tempo. Forget about ricing it out, I'm surprised it still runs, folks! With a top speed of about 70-80, what's the point?
Acolyte
03-05-2008, 07:34 PM
Upmarket? Not even that...
I'll admit, I've got a soft spot for them, since I learned to drive on one, and they're a favorite among university students (Because they're cheap-REALLY cheap-and you can pack a hell of a lot of junk in them), but, yeah, they have no right to any aftermarket bits past an air freshener. I'll bet that the spoiler cost more then the car.
And what's worse is that the car was primer beige and sanded in several places, meaning he was doing other work on it. Either he's flat broke or lost a bet.

My first car was a Tempo, a thoroughly-used '87 four-door. It didn't look too bad on the outside--the car had been repainted, and I tried to keep the rust at bay. Dad bought that thing when it was 3 years old, and took it on in '93. It wasn't to last--the engine blew up  roughly a year later. Insurance company ended up writing the car off.
If you really want to see something annoying...I've seen riced-out Saturns and Geo Metros! There's even one Metro owner claiming to be out-dragging Vipers and Corvettes on a regular basis. Yeah, and I've got ocean front property in Wyoming...
All of this rice crap can be blamed on 3 things--those stupid "Fast & Furious" movies. Ever since they came out, it seems everyone with a "fixed up" economy car suddenly thinks they own a world-class sports car
I got one for ya, Protege.......saw it in the parking lot at work...

Quite a few of those running around here, I'm afraid......:(
Speaking of Neons, Dodge made a turbo version called the SRT-4. It doesn't say Neon anywhere on it, duping the owners into thinking they aren't Neons. Call one a Neon and see what happens. Hilarity most definitely ensues.

I think the thing with the neons started when the NHRA announced they would be using the neon body for funnycar races, for some reason all the kids thought that meant they'd make good street racers
you might want to talk to you local public works office about getting a speed bump put in, if you rattle the right cages and CC your city councilman and/or the mayor along with signatures from your neighbors they just might listen
I had a 5-speed honda civic a few years ago, the previous owner had put "meatball" tail lights and a cold-air intake on it, I never raced her, but she was a good daily driver, got challenges all the time though, annoying as hell.

Considering that the posted limit on my street is 45 mph, I doubt they'd put in a speed bump. Hell, I wouldn't want one either.
Lately it's been pretty quiet for whatever reason. Someone must have pushed the right button with the local fuzz because I've seen several police cruisers sitting in the shopping complex across from me lat at night. :) Hope it stays that way.

Something like this (http://riceboypage.com/shame/hall_of_shame_5/pink-neon.jpg) Neon? More info on that car (and several others) can be found at Bryan's Rice-Boy Page (http://www.riceboypage.com). It's no longer updated, but is good for a laugh--the letters section is hilarious :)

And I can't stand the people who come ROARING through my neighborhood at night, in the middle of the night, with their music blaring, going at least 35mph+ in a 15mph parking lot. Enjoy it now, while the speed bumps are out for winter, jerks. :p

I think it is funny how these kids buy all these parts that do nothing to increase HP on a computer-controlled, fuel-injected engine. The only thing that does anything is Nitrous, and that stuff is so dangerous, the risk is more than most people are willing to take. All the other stuff is 'fluff' parts that make the engine look cool, but nothing else. There is another part you can add that has a marginal effect, which is a fuel cooling canister, but 99% of ricer owners just give you a blank stare when you ask if their car has one...most people don't even know what it is.
Not only that, is these kids do it to daily-driver cars, not ones that are hauled to tracks regularly. So, all this crap on their cars just to drive in the same stop & go traffic everyone else does.
My 92 Cadillac Seville toasts most of these kids at the 1/4 mile. They may be off the line faster because they are lighter, but when my 2nd gear kicks in, they're nothing more than road dust...

The best though, has to be the idiots who put neon lighting *under* their car...and then break the things on speed bumps, or on PA's notoriously sucky roads. I never understood the point of that, those stupid clear turn signal lenses, fart cans, and other cosmetic bullshit. To me, the cash would be better spent where it counts...on the mechanical stuff.
After my shitbox Tempo destroyed itself, I picked up a little Tercel. Nothing special about that car...other than what the previous owner had done to it. The car had been subtly lowered (and no, the springs were *not* cut...it was done properly), some engine mods done, and larger brakes (from a Corolla) were fitted. Other than that, it was completely stock. The car wasn't exactly fast, but it was great fun on twisty roads

Automatic Transmission for racing? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but aren't manual transmissions better for racing, considering it's less pressure on the vehicle because the driver does the shifting?

It depends on the transmission and the driver. :)
An automatic is actually better for drag racing since they are more consistent.
